ROH 6/02/18 TV Review: Austin Aries vs. Silas Young

This week was the third episode from the set of tapings from Chicago, Illinois. Ian Riccaboni and Colt Cabana were on commentary and welcomed everyone to show as Cody made his way to the ring.

A Cody in-ring segment started the show, he started to speak about how his plans on winning the ROH title, as he is the leader of the Bullet Club. This of course brought Scurll out, who seemed friendly enough, before teasing snapping Cody’s hand after a handshake. Scurll walked away looking stronger here and the issues between the two promise to raise the stakes at Best in the World.

First Match:  Tenille Dashwood vs Karen Q
Trading wrist locks, with Q taking the time to mock Dashwood a bit, reminding us that she’s the heel here. The two traded standing switches until Dashwood took the leg and took control. There was an issue with a head scissors attempt and Q slid to the outside for a powder, only to roll back in when Dashwood journeyed outside. Q tried to take advantage, but Dashwood hit a neckbreaker on the ropes before heading back into the ring.Q in control after the break, couldn’t put Dashwood away and grew frustrated and found herself in a tarantula by Dashwood. Q locked on the Spring Roll, her version of the Boston crab. She grew frustrated and went for it again, but Dashwood tucked her head and pinned Q with a sunset flip for the win. This match was good, but nothing particularly exciting occurred here. Q has shown herself to be above average before and this match seemed to be a perfect spot for both to really do a great deal, but the match never hit that next gear.

Winner: Tenille Dashwood

A video package recapping the issues between Adam Page and Punishment Martinez aired next, most likely pointing to a blow-off match at Best in the World between the two.

Main Event: ROH World Television Championship Match
Silas Young(c) vs. Austin Aries
Aries caught Young’s shirt as the champ threw it and Cabana made a great Robin Yount reference. Aries almost locked on Last Chancery early, but Young was able to slip outside and upon returning was able to overtake Aries with wrist lock before things sped up. Aries hit an elbow drop to the spine for a two count and then resorted to grabbing Young’s chest hair to stop him from leaving the ring. Young was knocked outside, but thwarted a suicide dive and then threw Aries into the barricade. Young beat him about the ring as referee Paul Turner admonished him. Young was in control until Aries was able to escape a full nelson using the ropes. With Young on the outside, Aries followed with a suicide dive and followed up with a missile dropkick back on the inside. Paul Turner eventually got knocked out, allowing Beer City Bruiser and Kenny King to run down to ringside. King stopped Bruiser and then took one of Aries’s titles from Young, striking him with it. Aries pinned Young and won the match….but wait, there’s more. Todd Sinclair ran down and told Turner what transpired and then decision was reversed, giving Young the win via DQ for King’s interference. Aries then lost his cool and attacked Todd Sinclair. King cooled him down, hanging him his belts,. Aries to kicked King and then hit a brainbuster before locking on the Last Chancery. Aries walked off with his belts as commentary mused about what this could all mean. Fun match between the two here-Young can really show off how accomplished he is in the ring when he’s not just working the cheating heel schtick.  Young retaining is the right move and King/Aries sets up a feud between them or a triple threat for the PPV-both of which would be good matches.

Winner: Silas Young

Final Reaction: C+
On an episode with two wrestling matches, the first could have been a bit stronger here, especially considering that Q and Dashwood are particularly accomplished in-ring talents. The video packages were well done here and are setting up Best in the World matches that makes sense in terms of everything that has occurred before. Young and Aries was a fun main event and the implications of the ending definitely garner interest. The only odd thing here, which impacted the show was the mention of Jay lethal making a huge announcement that never occurred. By the end of the show, I was waiting for the announcement and was bewildered not to hear anything, almost making me feel as if I had missed something. Simply put-something like this should not have occurred, it feels sloppy and when used as a tease, it was a let down by the end of the program.
