This week we step back into the WWE of yesteryear…back when it was a Federation and not purely Entertainment (even if this week’s match is only for entertainment). My classic match this week comes from Survivor Series 1994 and features Jerry “The King” Lawler and his Royal Family taking on Doink and Clowns R Us in a 4 on 4 elimination match!
What this match isn’t:
1.       A classic wrestling match
2.       A technical masterpiece
3.       Normally worth watching
What this match is:
1.       A whole lot of fun.
The mid 90s for the WWF were characterized by very over the top cartoony characters. This match is the perfect representation of that.  Jerry “The King” Lawler vs. Doink and 3 other midget clowns doesn’t exactly have buyrates written all over. However, if you take this match lightly I think you’ll enjoy it. There’s a pretty good amount of comedy in it (for the 90s) and told a pretty fun story. Doink being the first eliminated for his team caught me off guard the first time I watched the match, but it made sense in the overall match context. Plus, it allowed Doink to come back at the end and pie The King in the face to finish off the segment.
This match normally takes a lot of criticism, and quite frankly, it is easy to see why. But if it’s taken in the right context, with the right attitude, I think we’ll all be able to sit back and enjoy some early WWF comedy.
Join me back in 2 weeks for another edition of Matt’s Classics! Be good everyone!
