Somebody call my momma!

After weeks of so-called buildup, Brodus Clay, the monstrous former lackey of Alberto Del Rio, made his long awaited debut on Raw in incredibly shocking fashion. Instead of entering to hard rock music en route to smashing a defenseless jobber like we watched him do for weeks on WWE Superstars last year, Clay swag strutted—yes, swag strutted—to the ring with two bootylicious babes at his side. Following a well choreographic dance routine with his valets, he proceeded to annihilate Curt Hawkins with the most funk we’ve seen in a WWE ring since Terry himself.

The reaction to the flabbergasting debut of “The Funkasaurus” was enormous, albeit mixed. Within minutes, the terms “Brodus Clay” and “Funkasaurus” were trending worldwide on Twitter, which I’m sure had the entire WWE front office dancing in the streets. Internet message board were set ablaze with impassioned wrestling fans showing their love or hate for the man from Planet Funk. Threads such as “BRODUS CLAY WTF” began popping up on forums left and right, fans outraged with this trolling of mass proportions. On the contrary, some people loved it, saying that his debut was just the start of an incredibly entertaining—and funky—career.

Count me in with the latter. Up until this past Monday, I didn’t see anything in Clay but Type 2 diabetes. For weeks, Interim Raw GM John Laurinaitis would delay his debut, and I would be lying if I claimed to care… why would I? His matches on NXT weren’t exactly gripping, and his days as Alberto Del Rio’s bodyguard failed to grab my attention. To me, he was just another mammoth of a man that Vince McMahon saw something in who would be released without a trace (Sylvester Terkay, anyone?). So when John “Big Johnny” Laurinaitis announced that Brodus Clay would be debuting later in Monday’s RAW SuperShow, I practically had my foot in the bathroom door when I heard Justin Roberts utter these words: “After weeks of anticipation, finally landing on Monday Night Raw… from Planet Funk… please welcome ‘The Funkasaurus’ Brodus Clay!”

My head turned just in time to watch the most unexpected thing to happen on RAW in weeks, which was “Boring Brodus” dancing to the ring to the tune of “Somebody Call My Momma”. It instantly glued me to the TV and a smile to my face as I watched Brodus show charisma that I had no idea his enormous frame even possessed. From the strut after throwing Hawkins’ face to the mat to the utterance of the words “My bad!” after suplexing him across the ring, he had me fully entertained. I doubt I would have held in my urine had he been strapped with the generic “monster heel” gimmick that rarely goes anywhere besides the back of wrestling fans’ minds.

Do you think he would have been trending worldwide on Twitter had he came out on Raw and did his best Giant Haystacks impression? I doubt it. Do you think that message boards would have reacted as strongly as they did had he walked down the ramp with no personality? Not likely; they probably wouldn’t have even watched.

Upon seeing his shocker of a debut, I did a little YouTube search on the big man and found this fantastic promo. Because I wasn’t exactly the most avid NXT watcher during his season, I must have missed that gem. Did you see the heat he got with only his words? It showed that he is more than competent at drawing a crowd reaction, especially since NXT crowds tend to let the crickets do the cheering. Shortly after viewing it, I watched this funkerific interview posted on WWE.com shortly after his debut and was equally as impressed. He really seems to enjoy his character.

I’m eagerly looking forward to Clay being put in a real feud so he can not only compete with better competitors, but show the Raw audience his ability to talk the talk. His gimmick is completely different than anything in the WWE currently, and I believe that the contrast alone will grab the audiences full attention. Can you imagine Brodus Clay talking jive with Chris Jericho? Oh wait, Jericho won’t open his mouth…

So in conclusion, a funky Brodus Clay is much better than just a fat Brodus Clay.

  1. Awesome article man.

Brodus has shown something I haven’t seen in a while in WWE: pure fun. I did question whether he could be a main event talent, until I saw the WWE.com video you linked a while back. For some reason, I reached an epiphany that Brodus’ funk gimmick could be permanent if he can find a median between seriousness and his gimmick like he did in the interview – sort of.

  2. Thanks! And “pure fun” is a great way to describe his new found gimmick. I honestly laughed from the moment he came down the ramp until the moment he walked back up.
