Match in Five Words or Less: Give The Angle The Axe

Match Highlights: I’m literally just glad to get this whole Chikarametrics/Gekido deal out of the way right away. Apparently, the Everett crowd was having the same thing as Portland for dinner because they’re PUMPED! Frightmare begins with Soldier Ant. Quick exchange of roll-ups to start. More mat work before they lock knuckles. Armdrags by Frightmare. Exchange of legsweeps leads to a stalemate. We get a salute/scream-off. They even have some fun and do what the other is typically known for. Then they both scream and scare Bryce Remsburg. Amazing. deviANT and combatANT have no use for this tomfoolery. Soldier Ant is sent outside. Frightmare sent out of the ring and high fives Soldier Ant. deviANT sent out of the ring by Mantis and Wicked. Sidewinder hits. deviANT comes back in the ring and works over Mantis in the corner. Forearms and choking. Mantis with a roll into the nearfall. Atomic drop. deviANT reverses the whip. Monkey flip blocked as Wicked hits an iconoclasm. Perfect neckbreaker by Mantis. Running clothesline and Wicked covers for two. Wicked lifts him in the firemen’s carry position. Wicked changes course and sends deviANT into his partner. Step-up rana hit by Wicked. deviANT with a knee to the back. Blind tag. Clothesline misses. Wicked lifts deviANT again. combatANT hits a bicycle kick. Choking by deviANT across the middle rope. Heat segment. Soldier Ant reluctantly becomes involved in the action but is conflicted about double teaming with the evil ants as he stands on the top rope and does nothing. Wicked with elbows and double axehandles. deviANT quickly regains the advantage. Wicked moves out of the way of a combatANT dive. Frightmare hits a cross body on combatANT. Series of clubbering blows and a running boot. Acecrusher off the ropes leads to a two count. Soldier makes the save but boots combatANT. deviANT tosses Soldier Ant. Soldier Ant brings deviANT outside and sends him head first into the post. They brawl as combatANT gets triple teamed. Safari Stretch by Mantis. Wicked hits a double stomp. Crucifix bomb by Frightmare leads to a three count.

Match Analysis: I have similar grievances to this match as I did to the six man tag the previous night, but the action was just a touch better here. Wicked, Mantis, and Frightmare should be favorites on the tecnicos side of King of Trios. Good stuff from those three. Not sure this was an appropriate way to open the show.

Match in Five Words or Less: Nothing Broken This Time

Match Highlights: Some history behind this one as Dunkerton is the one who broke Ophidian’s jaw in NWA Force-1. They also met a year ago in Cleveland where Ophidian defeated Dunkerton. Ophidian starts quickly by spitting mist in Dunkerton’s face. Series of chops. Dunkerton swings blindly around. Kick to the back by Ophidian. Dunkerton threatens the official but Ophidian brings him out. More chops and a basketball gets thrown. Referee rings the bell twice for whatever reason. Ophidian brings the basketball in the ring. Dunkerton is trying to use the crowd to help him. Kick from Ophidian. Dunkerton misses a clothesline. Kick by Ophidian. Kick in the corner followed immediately by running knees. Dunkerton goes outside and pours water into his eyes. Ophidian tears a sign as done by a young fan. Ophidian throws the basketball in Dunkerton’s face. Again to the body. Dunkerton. Uh oh. The man can see. Crowd gets behind him. Right hand sends Ophidian outside. Series of chops and a back elbow. Flying knee strike and a version of the rydeen bomb. Ophidian grabs Dunkerton by the throat and hits an enziguri. Double knees off the top rope. Series of jabs and a big right hand by Dunkerton send Ophidian down. Regalplex plants Ophidian on his dome. Ophidian swings around Dunkerton’s arm and applies the cobra clutch. Into the Death Clutch. Ophidian front bridges over. Dunkerton passes out, and the official stops the contest.

Delirious comes out to basically approve of Ophidian’s actions for the second straight night.

Match Analysis: I’ll give them points for creativity in the beginning as Ophidian got things started out quickly. Both guys brought it in the time given and had a solid encounter. This wasn’t amazing, but Chikara seems to be making an attempt at finally rebuilding Ophidian after his low winning percentage last year and some struggles with in-ring quality this year. Dunkerton is sort of limbo, but at least he’s got a .500 winning percentage since coming back.

Match in Five Words or Less: Corraling The Pieces

Match Highlights: Shoulder tackle by Shard. Stranger puts the guns up and hits an STO. Stranger heads back behind the curtain and he comes out with a plastic horse. The set almost comes down. The people scurrying to repair the entrance made me laugh… hard. Atomic drop on the horse. Stranger puts a sombrero on him. Could that be constituted as racist? Double axehandle met with a shot to the midsection. Kick to the head by Shard. Series of stomps in the corner. Series of kicks by Shard. Choking. Stranger with right hands to the midsection. Knee strike and elbow drop in response. Shard goes back to the kicks. Stranger from behind with a bulldog. Right hands and an uppercut. Clothesline misses. Enziguri by Shard. Boot from Stranger. Stranger circles the imaginary lasso and corrals Shard in for a boot. Gutwrench powerbomb. To the top rope. Leg drop hits. Done.

Match Analysis: Not as awesome as last night but still very fun for the most part. Perfectly solid match although the Shard is irrelevant at this point. His interaction with Gekido is minimal and he’s not in any storylines. Happy for Stranger. Sad for Shard. That’s how I feel about this.

-3.0 feels homesick from the promised. Things feel weird teaming with Akuma as opposed to El Generico. Matthews wants three points and he says they’re stuck in trios match this weekend. Akuma is also there but says nothing. Parker drinks some Tim Horton’s coffee.

Match in Five Words or Less: A New Army

Match Highlights: Parker and Matthews have some fun with toilet paper before the match in honor of Kobald’s finisher name. Matthews and Obaryion start. Obaryion exits before contact is made. Waistlock takedown as Matthews says he has one point. Feeling out process. Dropkick and elbow drop. Akuma and Kodama come in. Exchange of armdrags. Kodama hits a sweet rana as Akuma exits. Parker and Kobald enter. Some shenangians. Kobald resorts to biting. Abdominal stretch and more biting from Kobald. He kicks Parker away. Leg lariat by Parker. Parker bites Kobald. Tag to Matthews. Clubbering blow to the back. Elbow drop off the ropes. Double axehandle to the left arm of Kobald. Elbow strike to the head. Akuma hits a leg kick. Octopus applied. Akuma slingshots Obaryion in the ring. After a switch, Obaryion gets a cheap leg lariat on Akuma. Batiri work Akuma over.  Akuma fires back with kicks and then hits a clothesline. Obaryion and Kodama knock 3.0 off the apron. Akuma counters a suplex. O’Connor roll leads right to the hot tag. Double team on all three members of the Batiri. Drop toehold into the elbow drop by Parker. Kobald gets a victory roll for two. Double dropkicks to the head of Matthews. Kobald holds the ropes open. Double tope suicidas from Obaryion and Kodama. Kobald goes for a dive but gets kicked in the midsection. Leaping kick to the head. Matthews with a short clothesline on Obaryion. Dropkick by Kodama. Discus forearm by Parker. Spear by Kobald. Akuma drops Kobald’s midsection into his knees. Backcracker by Obaryion out of the corner. Da powerbomb by Matthews. Kodama hits a neckbreaker off the top rope. Parker hits a gory special. Kobald gets kicked while on the top rope. Exploder off the top rope. Delirious comes in and crotches Akuma. Chokebomb on Parker. He calls for Ophidian to come out. Matthews tries battling Delirious off, but we have ourselves a beatdown. The match obviously gets thrown out.

Beatdown continues and Delirious appears to have his new army of men to take out The Spectral Envoy, specifically Ultramantis Black. 3.0 doesn’t really help Akuma to the back.

Match Analysis: Very fun match with lots of action (so hard to keep up). I can even accept the ending because it gives Batiri a greater purpose, establishes a new group for Delirious to lead, and gives a new trio for 3.0 and Akuma to possibly have to unite against. Quality work all the way around here.

-Icarus calls Del Rey’s victory in the 12 Large was a fluke and he’s here for the long run.

Match in Five Words or Less: Good Bye Sara

Match Highlights: These two had an incredible spectacle back in Chicago, so this is a really good way to send Del Rey off. Not only does Icarus take his jacket off but he sprays himself down with something. Remsburg is fake choking. Del Rey is also having trouble breathing. Test of strength to start. Del Rey comes out on top. Icarus screams and leaves. Lock-up to the corner. Del Rey can’t stand the smell. Icarus goes to the middle turnbuckle and poses. Del Rey does the same. Didn’t know when I bought this mp4 I was buying a ticket to the gun show too. Del Rey kicks Icarus out of the ring. Del Rey works Icarus’s left leg. Del Rey takes Icarus over by working the arm. Icarus grabs the hair. He tries to kiss Remsburg and gets slapped. O’Connor roll by Del Rey. Hip tosses. This goes on for a while and even Remsburg becomes involved. Whip to the corner. Icarus stuns her across the top rope. Dropkick. Choking along the middle rope. Punt to the head while Del Rey is prone. La Maestral for two. Version of the cattle mutiliation. Del Rey escapes and kicks Icarus. Snapmare into the chinlock. Elbow drop misses. A second misses as Del Rey walks out of the ring. Baseball dropkick misses. Series of kicks as they walk around ringside. Icarus goes into the crowd and nails her with… something. No idea what. Back in the ring for a two count. Series of punches in the corner. Biting makes Del Rey MAD. Series of forearms by Del Rey. Rolling elbow. Kicks with Icarus on the ropes. Back drop. German suplex blocked. Sunset flip and he puts his feet on the ropes. Del Rey kicks out. Combo kick sends Icarus down. 1-2-NO! Icarus screams and whiffs on a combo kick. Axe kick. 1-2-NO! Icarus with a cradle while holding onto the tights. Del Rey hits a German suplex. LaBelle Lock. Jackknife pin by Icarus gets him a win out of nowhere.

Del Rey kicks him and Royal Butterlfies him over anyway. A fine last statement before leaving Chikara. Crowd gives her a standing ovation as she departs.

Match Analysis: Not a huge fan of the out of nowhere finish but these two are able to put together very entertaining matches. Don’t ever expect something to wow you moveset wise, but these two have excellent chemistry and this was a fine way to send Del Rey out the door. Thank you Sara Del Rey for making me believe in women’s wrestling and showing what they can do in this sport without fake breasts and fake hair. I wish her the best of luck (she’s going to need it) in WWE.

-Jakob Hammermeier talks about the YLC next month and training with Tim Donst. He runs down the names, including Hallowicked. Donst is still moping in the background and then beings saying how Wicked isn’t human and talks about what happened at the iPPV. Donst goes completely off and calls Wicked a God. Hammermeier seems disturbed. Donst says everyone is on the path to a finished career. He doesn’t want Hammermeier to win the cup because the run to the finish line becomes a sprint. This was eyebrow raising.

Match in Five Words or Less: Jigsaw Gets Hammered

Match Highlights: They stay on the mat to begin. Jigsaw locks his legs and pulls at Hammermeier’s hair. Jigsaw with a bodyslam. More pulling on the hair, this time with his feet. Fist drop. Elbow by Hammermeier. Rana by Jigsaw. Armdrag and he rolls up for a kick to the side of the head. Crowd is actually mixed. Jigsaw lifts Hammermeier up and drops him. Big tope suicida. Hammermeier sends Jigsaw’s head into the apron. They go the merch tables. Hammermeier nearly sends Jigsaw into a New England Patriots symbol. Jigsaw bounces Hammermeier’s head off the wall. Hilarious. Clubbering blow to the back before sending him back in the ring. Hammermeier begs off but sends Jigsaw into the middle rope. Series of strikes. Choking along the middle rope. Elbows to the knee of Jigsaw. Elbows and a chop from Jigsaw. Bulldog from behind by Hammermeier. Jigsaw comes back with a series of chops. Chinbreaker by Hammermeier. Shoulder blocks in the corner. Jigsaw elbows out of the firemen’s carry position and hits a German suplex. Jigsaw with chops. Kick blocked. Elbow. Back to the kicks. He ends the flurry with an enziguri. Superkick turned into the backbreaker by Hammermeier. Forearm exchange. Hammermeier goes to the eyes. Jigsaw hits a Michinoku driver. Superkick. Brainbuster countered. Jigsaw almost sent into the referee. Shot to the throat by Hammermeier followed by a neckbreaker. Hammermeier covers and gets the win in a huge upset.

Match Analysis: If nothing else, Chikara is giving you every reason to believe Hammermeier is going to win the Young Lion’s Cup, a wise move considering he’s in the tournament and has his angle with Donst going on. Not a great match by any means as Hammermeier is not the type of wrestler capable of delivering at the level of a Quack, Wicked, Donst, or Jigsaw. This didn’t exactly leave me clamoring for a Hammermeier YLC run.

Match in Five Words or Less: No Marty

Match Highlights: Green Ant talks about Marty Janetty not being in the house to be a part of the contest and Steve Weiner being his replacement. Not much you can do in this situation. Ice Creams try to put some young fans in the ring because they’re ironically wearing the masks. Amazing. Remsburg brings one of them in. The little boy runs away scared. Green Ant has his antennae grabbed by Hijo. Some touching and laughing. Chopping by Green Ant. Hijo takes him over. Some Lucha from both men. Tilt a whirl backbreaker and Hijo crawls in the corner. Poke to the eyes. Bodyslam and running splash by Green Ant. 9 punches in the corner. Junior tries to make the save but gets hit with a cross body. Green Ant armdrags Hijo into Junior. Series of punches on both men in the corner. Drop toehold by Junior. Hijo dances but misses an elbow drop. Slap to the chest by Green Ant. Blind charge misses. Running splash. Green Ant held by Junior. Double team by Los Ice Creams. Miscommunication leads to a dropkick by Green Ant. Jawbreaker by Hijo. Snapmare by Junior and he goes for the antennae. Stomp on the hand by Hijo. Green Ant leapfrogs. Junior shoulder tackles his own man. Hijo goes for a series of covers. Double thrusts and a cannonball senton. Whip to the corner. Running dropkick by Hijo as Junior hits a series of kicks. Armdrag sends Junior hard into the corner. Two count on Green Ant. Headbutts in the corner. Gutbuster by Hijo. Sitting abdominal stretch.  Green Ant sends the ants into each other. Clotheslines by Weiner as he finally tags in. He breaks through the double clothesline by Los Ice Creams and hits one of his own.  Series of running splashes. Bulldog/dropkick combo. Hijo with a boot and stunner. Junior brings out the sprinkles and drops them in the ring. Hijo distracts Remsburg. Bodyslam into the sprinkles. Weiner no sells because of the shell. Hijo throws them in his eyes. Flying hip attack by Hijo. Junior covers and gets the victory.

Match Analysis: This is a match that certainly has its place on Chikara cards once in a while. Under the circumstances presented, this was acceptable. Nothing you can do about Janetty not showing up. Any fan who blames Chikara for the replacement being Weiner can do something extremely unfamily friendly to themselves if you know what I mean.

Winner (s)/Time/Match Rating/Entertainment Rating: Los Ice Creams/11:45/**1/2/**1/2

Match in Five Words or Less: YLC Goes Beyond

Match Highlights: This is like a Beyond Wrestling reunion in a Chikara ring. Crowd is behind ACH because they’re a smart group of people (for the most part). ACH and Epic start out basic. Dunn climbs to the top rope. ACH meets him. Dunn goes for the tiger driver. Back drop by ACH. Second rope 450 and ACH picks up the win.

Match Analysis: Of the four YLC matches, this was the best because of the talent  involved. Dunn, Marseglia, Epic, and ACH are some of the best kept secrets in pro wrestling. Yet, they should be receiving more opportunities everywhere based on this match and on their work in promotions like Beyond Wrestling and some of the other smaller companies across the country. I do have a bias for ACH and am glad he won out right, but all four of these guys are very good talents who I hope to see working in other places very soon.

Winner (s)/Time/Match Rating/Entertainment Rating: ACH/13:24/***1/4/***

-Mark Angelosetti tries to motivating Dasher Hatfield. Hatfield yells at Angelosetti for using foreign objects in the matches. He goes off on him for every opportunity he’s ever given his cousin. Hatfield warns Angelosetti about cheating. No mischief. Angelosetti says it’s good.

Matt covers and gets the win for his team. Bucks retain.

Matt says, “See what you’re missing Ring of Honor?” Hmmmm.

Match Analysis: The Bucks have the reputation of being one of the best in the world. They showed why again here as they had a really good contest with Dasher Hatfield and Mark Angelosetti. The tone for their title run was set at Chikarasaurus Rex. I’m not expecting the insanity of their PWG matches, but they’ll still put together some of the best tag team wrestling on the indies. The Throwbacks have developed into a solid team, but I don’t expect them to be together very much longer. Nonetheless, Hatfield and Angelosetti are able to stand on their own as a solid team. Really good way to cap the show.

Winner (s)/Time/Match Rating/Entertainment Rating: The Young Bucks/22:37/***1/2/***1/2

The Verdict: Because of the last two matches and some solid action throughout the card really, I’ll give this show a minor thumbs up. It’s not near the quality of “The Great Escape,” but you’ll certainly have a good time watching. I walked away from the weekend with a much more positive outlook about the promotion based on what I saw from Chikara here.

For more information in CHIKARA Pro, including tickets and event information, please check their website. While you can purchase DVDs there as well, you can also purchase their DVDs on Smart Mark VideoSomething relatively new to Smart Mark Video is video downloads. This is a great way to save on shipping and not have a DVD clogging your shelf (if that’s what you’re concerned about). It’s super easy to purchase and then download on your computer. I could not recommend this service strongly enough whether you’re buying CHIKARA or many other promotions.

To get a great sense of history and participate in discussion of the company, check out their official messageboard. One thing the promotion does really well? Videos. They have frequent (almost daily) updates on their YouTube channel.

As someone who is not nearly the CHIKARA fan as certain others, even I need to look up information and have a good CHIKARA resource. I can can think of no better place to do this and also read exclusive reviews of every CHIKARA show in history than at The CHIKARA Special. Kevin Ford maintains this little blog and also updates a CHIKARA Special Tumblr with news and videos nearly every day.
