Opening Match: Delirious vs. Matt Sydal (ROH Reborn Stage 1 – 4/23/04)

Both men were debuting for Ring of Honor in this match. They trade control on the mat. Delirious waits for an opportune time to connect with a lariat. He snaps off a hurricanrana but walks into a spin kick. Sydal monkey flips him across the ring. Sydal snaps off a nice headscissors and hits the Here It Is Driver for a nearfall. He lands on his feet after Delirious avoids a shooting star press. Delirious hits a side slam. They battle up top and Sydal hits a belly to belly suplex for the win at 6:34. Clearly, both men impressed enough to earn full-time spots in the promotion. While the action was a little rough around the edges, I think they got the most out of their seven minutes. **½

Match #2: Delirious vs. Samoa Joe vs. Ebessan vs. Jack Evans (Final Showdown – 5/13/05)

Ebessan “out-dances” Evans to start. Evans talks some trash in Japanese and connects with an enzuigiri. Delirious and Ebessan get into what looks like an intelligent debate. The referee tells them to fight each other, so they casually slap each other across the chest. Dave Prazak is gold on commentary for this. They proceed to wrestle in slow motion. Joe avoids some offense from Evans and delivers a brutal kick. Delirious connects with repeated corner lariats on Evans and he gets worked over. Evans back drops Ebessan and easily tags out. Ebessan bulldogs Evans while connecting with a lariat on Delirious. He follows with a death valley driver on Delirious. Joe hits a powerslam on Evans and an STO on Delirious. Joe applies a rear-naked choke on Ebessan. Meanwhile, Evans lands a 630 onto Delirious for the victory at 13:47. While there was some solid wrestling to be found down the stretch, I don’t think a rating applies due to the high comedic value of the whole match. If anything, this was a glimpse of how effective Delirious’ character could be. The finish itself was also pretty inventive, as it paid off the playful tension between Joe and Evans.

Match #3: Delirious and Alex Shelley vs. Roderick Strong and Jack Evans (Nowhere to Run – 5/14/05)

After being kicked out of Generation Next, the whole locker room refused to team with Shelley…except Delirious. Shelley out-wrestles Strong and spits at him. Evans starts dancing and Delirious tells the referee that he pulled his hair. Awesome. Delirious snaps off an armdrag and starts biting Evans’ hand. Shelley drives Evans onto Delirious’ knees in a moment of teamwork. Shelley starts stretching Evans on the mat. Strong blind tags into the match and Generation Next isolate Delirious. He connects with a leaping lariat on Strong and makes the tag. Shelley hits a tornado DDT on Strong. Delirious takes out Strong with a dive from the top rope. Evans hits a fisherman buster on Shelley. Strong military presses Delirious into the barricade and hits a half-nelson backbreaker on Shelley. Delirious connects with the Panic Attack on Strong, but Shadows Over Hell is reversed into a gutbuster. Generation Next hit a doomsday crossbody on Delirious for a nearfall. Shelley locks in the Border City Stretch on Strong, but Evans breaks up the hold. Evans finds boots on a moonsault attempt and falls victim to Shadows Over Hell. Strong hits a gutbuster on Shelley. Evans catches Delirious with an assisted double stomp. Strong locks in the Stronghold on Delirious for the win at 16:32. It would be hard not to become invested in the action during the course of this match. Shelley legitimately seemed like he was fighting for his life against his former stablemates. Strong and Evans clicked so well as a team and even the makeshift team of Delirious and Shelley had their moments. I would expect nothing less out of these four. ***½

Match #4: Delirious and Bryan Danielson vs. Alex Shelley and Jimmy Rave (Dragon Gate Challenge – 3/30/06)

Delirious hums Danielson’s entrance theme while locking up with Shelley. They trade control on the mat. Rave tries to take advantage of a blind tag to no avail. Danielson stretches Shelley and turns a surfboard into a dragon sleeper. Delirious airplane spins Rave in homage to his partner. Danielson airplane spins Rave as well to show Delirious how it’s done. A distraction by Prince Nana allows Shelley to dropkick Danielson through the ropes. The Embassy work over Danielson until he connects with a double dropkick and makes the tag. Delirious headscissors Rave and hits a cobra clutch backbreaker. He follows with the Panic Attack. Rave avoids Shadows Over Hell and Shelley superkicks Delirious. Danielson connects with a missile dropkick on Shelley and applies Cattle Mutilation on Rave. Delirious traps Shelley in Cattle Mutilation as well. The Embassy escape the holds. Danielson lands a dive to the floor onto Rave. Shelley low blows Delirious behind the referee’s back and hits sliced bread for the victory at 20:54. This match actually fell a bit short of my expectations. While the early interactions between Danielson and Delirious were entertaining, the action seemed a bit plodding until the final three minutes. Perhaps they could have trimmed some time off this contest, but there was still enough substance here to make the match worthwhile. ***¼

Match #5: Delirious vs. Ricky Reyes (Better Than Our Best – 4/1/06)

Delirious’ spot in Ring of Honor is on the line. Delirious connects with a baseball slide and sends Reyes into the barricade. A distraction by Julius Smokes allows Reyes to gain the advantage momentarily. In the ring, Reyes connects with a spin kick and hits a twisting neckbreaker. He locks in a dragon sleeper but Delirious quickly reaches the bottom rope. Reyes takes over until Delirious hits Shadows Over Hell. Delirious adds a Bizzaro Driver. Reyes responds with two neckbreakers and a fisherman buster. Delirious applies the cobra stretch to keep his spot at 6:14. They definitely got their point across in the time given. Delirious’ first win came off like a big deal and the debut of the cobra stretch was icing on the cake. **½

Match #6: ROH World Title: Bryan Danielson © vs. Delirious (The 100th Show – 4/22/06)

Danielson attacks before the opening bell and synchs in a surfboard. He drives Delirious’ knees into the canvas. Danielson transitions into a bow and arrow. Delirious survives Cattle Mutilation and avoids a diving headbutt. He connects with repeated lariats in the corner. They battle up top and Danielson hits a superplex. Danielson reigns down MMA elbows to retain his title at 15:30. This contest played out exactly how you’d expect and that’s what was so much fun about it. Danielson acting like a jerk is always entertaining, especially in a situation where he didn’t have a reason to take his opponent seriously. Delirious’ comeback had the crowd in a frenzy and perhaps the true value of this match was how well it setup a rematch. ***½

Match #7: Delirious vs. Chris Sabin (Weekend of Champions Night 2 – 4/29/06)

They exchange pin attempts to no avail and find themselves at a stalemate. Sabin connects with a springboard dropkick followed by a kick to the back of the head. Delirious fires back with a leaping lariat and hits a back suplex. They trade kicks and both men are down. Delirious blocks a charge and comes off the middle rope with a dropkick. He connects with the Panic Attack and snaps off a hurricanrana. Sabin lays in a stiff kick and hits a liger bomb. He adds a corner yakuza kick and a hesitation dropkick. They battle on the middle rope and Sabin gets knocked to the canvas. Delirious hits Shadows Over Hell for a nearfall. Sabin fights off the cobra stretch. Delirious escapes Cradle Shock but falls victim to a backbreaker. Delirious armdrags out of another Cradle Shock attempt and locks in the cobra stretch for the win at 11:37. Just an awesome finishing sequence, with the cobra stretch looking lethal once again. There’s also a great spot where Delirious, knowing Sabin wasn’t hunched over enough for Shadows Over Hell, decided to come off the top with a hurricanrana. They didn’t have the best chemistry together, but there are a few brilliant moments throughout the course of this match. ***

Delirious gets his feet across the bottom rope! Danielson lays in MMA elbows but Delirious fights back! Danielson sneaks in a small package to retain his title at 24:28. Delirious never felt like a bigger deal than he did here. He withstood everything that Danielson threw at him and then some. The action built off their last match, with Delirious receiving significantly more offense this time. The story of this match was Delirious’ tunnel vision in regards to a certain strategy. Danielson was able to take advantage of his repetitiveness on multiple occasions, culminating in the small package finish. There’s quite a lot to sink your teeth into here and they delivered an excellent outing. ***¾

Match #9: ROH Pure Title: Nigel McGuinness © vs. Delirious (Time to Man Up – 8/4/06)

McGuinness makes Delirious waste his first rope break early on. Actually, make that all three rope breaks. We’re three minutes into this match and Delirious has zero rope breaks remaining. He connects with repeated lariats in the corner. Delirious cunningly makes McGuinness use two of his rope breaks. McGuinness turns the tide with a huge lariat. Delirious responds with a Panic Attack and hits Shadows Over Hell. McGuinness uses his final rope break to escape a cobra stretch. The ropes are in play for both men. The action goes to the floor where McGuinness throws Delirious into the crowd. He connects with a lariat but Delirious still beats the count. McGuinness blocks Shadows Over Hell with an uppercut. He hits the Tower of London for a nearfall. Delirious armdrags out of another Tower of London and locks in a cobra stretch. McGuinness refuses to tap out. He blocks Shadows Over hell and hits another Tower of London for a two count. McGuinness connects with a rope-assisted lariat but Delirious won’t stay down. Delirious tries a small package to no avail. He headscissors out of a back suplex but McGuinness comes roaring back with a jawbreaker lariat for a nearfall. McGuinness synchs in Cattle Mutilation to retain his title at 17:19. Delirious losing all three of his rope breaks in the opening minutes made perfect sense for some reason. These two had solid chemistry together and showed off some unique counter wrestling. The references to Bryan Danielson down the stretch from both men were entertaining as well. I got the sense that they had more in them, but this was a lot of fun. ***¼

Match #10: Delirious vs. Matt Sydal (Epic Encounter II – 8/25/06)

Delirious frustrates Sydal with his unorthodox offense to start. Sydal snaps off a few armdrags but gets draped across the top rope. He recovers with a corner lariat and a slingshot dropkick. Delirious hits an awkward facebuster and takes control. He connects with the Panic Attack at one point for a nearfall. Sydal lands a crossbody, sending him to the floor. Delirious crawls under the ring but his sneak attack fails. Sydal connects with a series of strikes and hits the Here It Is Driver. He snaps off a headscissors and connects with a spin kick. Delirious retreats to the floor and gets taken out by a dive. In the ring, Delirious hits a rope-assisted neckbreaker and a cobra clutch backbreaker. Sydal finds the ropes during a cobra stretch attempt. Delirious blocks a standing moonsault but Sydal lands another one. That was odd. Delirious hits a reverse hurricanrana and synchs in the cobra stretch. They trade pin attempts and Delirious hits the Bizzaro Driver for a nearfall. Sydal hits a belly to belly suplex from the top rope for the victory at 16:36. These two threw a lot at each other, but the crowd didn’t seem to care until the closing minutes of the match. I don’t think they ever found their rhythm here and that’s a shame, as it seemed like they were being built as rivals. I also didn’t see the point of them copying the finish from their previous match together. Not unwatchable by any means, but below expectations. **¾

Match #11: Elimination: Delirious, Colt Cabana, Nigel McGuinness, and BJ Whitmer vs. Bryan Danielson, Jimmy Rave, Shingo, and Jimmy Jacobs (Chicago Spectacular Night 2 – 12/9/06)

Cabana and Shingo match up pretty evenly to start. Jacobs enters the ring and starts brawling with Cabana. Danielson tags in but everyone on the opposing team gets their shots in on him. Whitmer hits an exploder on Rave. The match starts to break down. Jacobs brings out his spike. Whitmer steals the spike and inadvertently hits Lacey with it. Danielson and Delirious trade pin attempts to no avail. They exchange forearms and Danielson applies Cattle Mutilation. Delirious reaches the bottom rope. Danielson hits a back superplex and lays in MMA elbows. Danielson goes back to Cattle Mutilation but Delirious reverses into Chemical Imbalance II! He synchs in the cobra stretch and won’t let go. Danielson taps out, giving Delirious the win at 34:21. Six years later, it’s a lot of fun to look back at all of these personalities interacting for thirty-four minutes. The match didn’t feel overly long either, as the eliminations were spaced out well and none of them felt rushed. The Jacobs/Whitmer angle early on was effective, Rave came out of this match looking great, and the final stretch between Delirious and Danielson was awesome. This is a case where the booking really lent itself to match quality. ****

Match #12: Delirious, Roderick Strong, and Austin Aries vs. CIMA, Shingo, and Matt Sydal (Final Battle 2006 – 12/23/06)

Delirious and Sydal have a fast-paced exchange to start the match. Strong and Shingo have a shoulder block battle, which Strong wins by chopping him. CIMA tries to headscissors Aries and we all know how well that works. Aries lands a plancha onto all three of his opponents. In the ring, CIMA is worked over until he double stomps both Strong and Delirious and tags out. Shingo hits a michinoku driver on Aries and elevates Sydal onto him. Blood Generation isolate Aries until he lands a lionsault onto CIMA and Shingo and makes the tag. Delirious headscissors Shingo while Strong hits a gourdbuster on CIMA. Aries follows with the IED on Shingo and Delirious adds the Panic Attack. Delirious connects with repeated lariats in the corner on Shingo, who inflicts the same amount of pain with a single lariat. Strong hits a superplex on Shingo and connects with the Sick Kick. Delirious hits the Bizzaro Driver on CIMA. Sydal hurricanranas Strong off the middle rope and follows with some crazy neckbreaker. Aries punts Sydal and Delirious adds Chemical Imbalance II for a nearfall. Aries and Strong hit a chop-brainbuster combination on Shingo. Delirious hits Shadows Over Hell on Sydal and Aries follows with a 450 splash for a nearfall. Shingo plants Aries with a gutwrench suplex but finds himself in the cobra stretch. CIMA breaks up the hold and hits a package piledriver on Delirious for the victory at 24:30. I’m probably repeating many other people’s sentiments on this match when I say that it didn’t quite replicate the atmosphere of the infamous Supercard of Honor six-man tag, but there was still a lot of value here. Mainly, Strong and Aries added a refreshing element to this style of match. There were numerous well-executed sequences once the action broke down and considering the rating, it’s a testament to their abilities to say that the match only just met expectations. ***¾

Match #13: Delirious vs. KENTA (Reborn Again – 5/11/07)

They trade control on the mat and even communicate at points. Delirious does his best to avoid KENTA’s kicks. KENTA eventually lays in a series of kicks. Delirious starts biting his leg to deter him from throwing any more kicks. Delirious hits a back suplex but gets draped across the top rope. KENTA connects with a flying knee strike and takes control. Delirious dodges a yakuza kick and finds success with repeated lariats in the corner. He hits a german suplex and lands a dive from the top rope. In the ring, KENTA connects with a series of kicks. Delirious blocks a springboard maneuver with a headbutt. He drop toe holds KENTA into the turnbuckles and connects with the Panic Attack. KENTA kind of counters Shadows Over Hell into an ace crusher. He follows with a fisherman buster. Delirious answers with Shadows Over Hell and locks in the cobra stretch. KENTA reaches the bottom rope. Delirious hits Chemical Imbalance II for a nearfall. KENTA connects with a Busaiku Knee and hits Go 2 Sleep for the win at 22:01. Once the antics in the opening minutes wore off, this match started to feel a bit long as the action progressed. The crowd reacted to the contest in spurts and I couldn’t help but feel as though they were just running through their offenses without much rhyme or reason. The finish continued that trend, although the crowd seemed to come alive for the Go 2 Sleep. Overall, this wasn’t the best example of KENTA’s work in Ring of Honor around this time. **¾

Match #14: Falls Count Anywhere: Delirious vs. Adam Pearce (Reckless Abandon – 11/30/07)

They start brawling before the opening bell. Delirious hits a suplex onto the entrance ramp. He even tries a sunset flip on the ramp. Delirious lands a dive off the apron. Pearce hits a spinebuster into the barricade and attacks Delirious in the crowd. Pearce applies a figure four amongst the fans. Delirious reverses the pressure and chokes him with a chair. They brawl toward a scaffold. Delirious lays in a chair shot and applies the cobra stretch in between the rungs of the scaffold for the victory at 8:56. This type of brawl was pretty standard for undercards at this time and this was just fine considering how uninspiring Delirious’ feud was against the Hangmen 3. **½

Match #15: Delirious vs. Rhett Titus (Age of Insanity – 8/15/08)

Titus attacks Delirious during his entrance. Titus connects with a dropkick and hits a suplex. Jimmy Jacobs comes to ringside. He starts yelling “encouragement” at Delirious, who suddenly gets fired up. Delirious punts Titus in the head and dropkicks him into the barricade. He connects with a barricade-assisted Panic Attack. Titus is bleeding from the forehead. In the ring, Delirious lays in repeated Panic Attacks. The referee stops the match at 5:30. Not much of a match, but I agree with including this on Delirious’ compilation. After his fallout with Daizee Haze, this was an excellent transition for him and ultimately an underrated angle. **

Match #16: Delirious and Jimmy Jacobs vs. Tyler Black and Jerry Lynn (Stylin’ and Profilin’ – 3/13/09)

Jacobs distracts Black, allowing Delirious to attack from behind. Black avoids a Panic Attack and connects with a dropkick. Lynn snaps off a headscissors on Delirious and hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. Black adds a standing shooting star press. Lynn blocks a double axe handle from Jacobs, who quickly retreats once Black enters the ring. The Age of the Fall use some double teaming to isolate Lynn. He reverses a Contra Code into a TKO and makes the tag. Black connects with a springboard lariat on Delirious and Lynn hurricanranas him off the middle rope. Jacobs spears Lynn. Black elevates the Age of the Fall to the floor. Lynn and Black follow out with stereo dives. Delirious sends Lynn into the ringpost. Delirious plants him with the Bizzaro Driver for another two count. Jacobs inadvertently hits Delirious with a chair and gets speared to the outside. Black covers Delirious for the win at 14:47. This match was on its way to a decent rating before the finish took the wind out of everyone’s sails. I understand that there was angle advancement after the match, with Delirious leaving the Age of the Fall, but this contest was treated as an afterthought as a result. **½

Match #17: Street Fight: Delirious vs. Jimmy Jacobs (Tag Title Classic – 4/18/09)

They start brawling before either man can make his entrance. They eventually make their way into the ring, with Delirious predominantly in control. Jacobs side-steps Shadows Over Hell and applies the End Time. Delirious powers out of the hold and locks in the cobra stretch. Jacobs spears him off the apron and through the propped table at ringside. Daizee Haze appears at ringside and Jacobs corners her in the ring. He threatens to use the spike on her. Delirious spits mist into Jacobs’ face and hits a cobra clutch suplex. Delirious uses the spike to apply the cobra stretch for the victory at 16:20. They executed this brawl well, as the violence escalated as the match progressed and the crowd was with them for the entire duration. In a way, it’s unfortunate that Delirious’ character wasn’t really the highlight of this match until the finish, but the eventual payoff seemed like a big deal for a feud that was dragging its feet. Jacobs is a master in this type of situation and Delirious gave him a great weapons-based brawl. ***½

Match #18: Delirious vs. Roderick Strong (Boiling Point – 11/7/09)

These two had a lackluster feud in 2007. Fortunately, they haven’t met since then so this match feels somewhat fresh. Strong tries to pin Delirious while he’s frozen in the corner. They both miss baseball slides and Strong connects with some chops. Delirious drapes him across the ring apron and follows with a dive from the top rope. Strong just throws Delirious into the turnbuckles and locks in a boston crab. Delirious reverses into a rollup for a two count and synchs in the cobra stretch. He turns it into a cobra suplex and hits Shadows Over Hell for a nearfall. Delirious Panic Attacks Strong to the floor but gets caught in mid-dive with a kick. In the ring, Strong hits a backbreaker and transitions into the Stronghold. Delirious makes the ropes. Strong adds another backbreaker and they trade forearms. Strong hits a gutbuster along with a yakuza kick. Delirious answers with the Chemical Imbalance II for a nearfall. Strong hits a flurry of offense but falls victim to a cobra suplex. Delirious follows with three Panic Attacks for a two count. Strong catches him off-guard with a small package for the win at 18:33. Both men were working hard and they managed to have a spirited match, something I couldn’t say of their previous work. I’m not in love with the finish, but ROH was really focusing on keeping Delirious strong and he was coming off as more legitimate. If I remember the show in its entirety correctly, this match was one of the saving graces of the event. ***¼

Match #19: Cage Match: Delirious vs. Austin Aries (ROH on HDNet #74)

Delirious swings the cage door into Aries and throws him into the barricade. They make their way into the cage and Delirious chains the door shut. Delirious unleashes a good bit of offense, including a Panic Attack into the caging. He heads to the top of the cage but Aries sends him down throat-first across the top rope. Aries takes over until Delirious flips out of a brainbuster and hits a cobra clutch suplex. He follows with another Panic Attack and synchs in the cobra stretch. Rhett Titus and Kenny King run out and Delirious has to break the hold to stop them. Aries rakes Delirious’ face across the top of the cage. They battle on the top of the cage and Delirious locks in the cobra stretch for the win at 14:55. They played around with the stipulation in creative ways and Delirious’ energy was enough to get a usually quiet crowd into the action. The All Night Express interference was expected, leading to the post-match attack that was pretty effective. As an overall package, this worked on a good bit of levels. ***

Overall
: Delirious: Masked Insanity is an interesting compilation because the match selection is so diverse. Delirious has been involved in many different angles and his career in Ring of Honor covers a lot of ground. The match quality here is decent, with eleven out of the nineteen matches cracking three stars. The quality drops off a bit during the second disc, but there are good storyline reasons for some matches being included. As usual, Delirious gives his thoughts on the matches and yes, he is in character. I’m at a thumbs in the middle for this compilation and I don’t think the deciding factor should be whether or not you’re a big fan of Delirious. Rather, decide how much you value the wide assortment of matches and determine whether or not there’s enough substance for you.
