-Eita vs. Jon Davis

Match in Five Words or Less: Two (Three?) Impressive Showings

Match Highlights: Davis continues trying to intimidate ring side folk. It doesn’t work. Someone timing his entrance strikes me as both humorous and pretentious at the same time. Davis sits in the corner as the bell rings. No contact made for the first minute. Shove by Davis. Choke and a clubbering blow to the back. Stomp. Series of bodyslams. Leg drop misses. Eita with a diving cross body. La maestral. Small package turned into a stalling vertical suplex by Davis. Back suplex. Clubbering blows. Chop but Eita no sells. Eita with a hard chop of his own. Forearm by Davis. Eita catches himself in the ropes and chops Davis in the back. Dropkick misses once. Doesn’t miss twice. Davis sent outside. Dropkick to the leg. Sliding dropkick. Moonsault to the floor. Double axehandle to the back. Dropkick off the top rope. Davis catches Eita in a powerbomb. German suplex and a short clothesline leads to a Davis victory.

Match Analysis: Davis squashes Eita to prove he’s better than Gargano. Fairly simple story. DG USA is trying, but it’s not translating. Not a great opener, which I guess was the idea, but I really feel like Eita could have been used more productively over the weekend.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Jon Davis/6:18/**

-The Scene(Scott Reed and Caleb Konley w/Larry Dallas and Trina) vs. Tony Nese and Papadon

Match in Five Words or Less: Upstarts Get The Upset

Match Highlights: Papadon is the 2012 Super 8 winner while Nese is a former TNA contracted wrestler. Nese has made sporadic appearances within the WWN universe while this is Papadon’s debut. Reed hides in the ropes from Nese. Armdrags from Nese. He maintains hold on the arm of Reed. Whip by reed. Back elbow by Nese. Moonsault misses. Clothesline by Reed. Superkick from Nese. Pumphandle suplex by Nese. Papadon with a boot. Snapmare and kick to the back. European uppercut. Reed reverses. Up and over with an elbow by Papadon. Whip across. Reed gets his boot up. Blow to the back. Scene works Papadon briefly. Snapmare by Papadon. Cover by Nese. Left hand punch. Konley reverses. Hip toss blocked. Lucha roll by Nese. Reverse applied headscissors. Dallas grabs Nese’s leg. Clothesline by Reed. Here’s Marti Belle. Trina is used to block Dallas. Scene get the advantage on Nese regardless. Heat segment on Nese. Someone on Twitter apparently wants to be like the Scene. Boring heatless wrestlers? Nese ranas Reed off the middle rope. Papadon comes back in. Back kick and knee lift. Big boot. Reed exploded out of the corner. Headscissors by Papadon. Back elbow misses. Konley runs into one. Back elbow off the top rope by Papadon. Reed with a chop in the back. Nese sends him out. Flatliner into the middle rope by Papadon. Running knee by Nese. Powerbomb into the boots. Boot by Papadon. 1-2-NO! Nese sent out. Right hands from Papadon. Kicks from Reed. German suplex by Konley. Left hand by Nese. Double clothesline takes them both out. Konley chops a prone Papadon. Clubbering blows by Papadon. Trina distracts but Belle takes her down. Reed pulls Papadon. Kick by Nese. 450 follow-up on Konley and the local guys pick up their first win in DG USA.

Match Analysis: One of the better Scene matches I’ve seen and it doesn’t have much to do with their efforts. Papadon is a bigger guy. This is the first time I’ve seen him but he showed some aptitude and I would not be opposed to seeing him again. Nese has always looked good in his performances for DG USA and Evolve. He certainly deserves bigger and better opportunities, especially considering his opponents.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Tony Nese and Papadon/9:45/**1/2

-Scene get their heat back by tossing Nese and Papadon out. Then the Scene beat up Marti Belle. Dallas counts Belle down. Well, that’s a great way to pay off this weekend. Marti Belle literally does nothing the whole weekend and then gets beaten up. Productive use of time if I may say so. Sami Callihan and Arik Cannon make the save. So are Cannon and Callihan faces? Heels? I’m so confused.

-Arik Cannon vs. ACH

Match in Five Words or Less: Hopefully Not The Last Time

Match Highlights: Cannon attacks ACH right away. Chop on ACH. I guess Cannon is back to being a heel. Whip across. Boot by ACH. Rana off the middle rope. Shove in the corner. ACH with a double stomp. Back elbow by Cannon. ACH dropkicks Cannon outside. Tope suicida. Split legged moonsault but Cannon ducks. Superkick to the midsection. Clubbering blow. Cannon sent into the side of the ring. ACH clinbs and hits a rana. Cannon sent back in the ring. FREEBIRD! Cross body but Cannon moves out of the way. Elbow drop and stomp. Snapmare and a dropkick to the face. ACH takes him into the corner. Chop. Vertical suplex by Cannon. Forearm. ACH responds with one of his own. Back and forth with blows. Leg lariat by ACH. Slide to the outside and a kick to the face. Springboard acecrusher blocked. ACH kicks him away. Package DDT. Cannon chops ACH. Another chop. ACH rolls. Kick to the midsection by Cannon. Whip across. Boot by ACH. Rana caught. Bucklebomb and lariat by Cannon. ACH manages to get his foot on the bottom rope. Reverse rana hits. 1-2-NO! 450 off the middle rope misses. Back suplex countered. Lariat to the back of the head. Right hand by Cannon. Superkick. Brainbuster ends ACH’s night.

Match Analysis: This was good for the time given. I assume this was a try-out of sorts for ACH, so I can only assume that’s why he went under. But seriously, ACH should be brought back every single time out. There is no excuse for ACH to not be a focal point of the promotion in 2013. Cannon turned in a solid performance, but I have to question his purpose in DG USA moving forward.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Arik Cannon/6:45/**3/4

Match Analysis: A very entertaining match as you might expect from these four masked gentlemen. This was like a really entertaining CHIKARA match with all kinds of fun spots and lots of energy. These are two teams DG USA should honestly consider building around moving forward, especially SSB in relation to the Open the United Gate titles.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Super Smash Brothers/14:30/***1/2

Series of whips to the back, which ironicially he would have been able to do without resistance if he had pinned Swann two nights earlier. Taylor sets up for an Awful Waffle through a chair. Elbows by Swann. Elbow by Taylor. Leaping kick by Swann. Rana puts Taylor through the chair. Swann grabs another one and meekly hits Taylor in the head. Spin kick. Standing 450. Swann wins.

Match Analysis: It’s tough to take these two guys seriously sometimes, but when they apply themselves, they can still put on really good matches like they did here. Good work all around as they didn’t empty out the kitchen sink. They went appropriately violent without crossing the line or taking any ridiculous bumps. I don’t think blood would have enhanced this match in any conceivable way. I enjoyed this.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Rich Swann/13:04/***1/4

Match Analysis: CIMA ‘s strength has never been selling, and this match was no exception. Good action throughout but it didn’t really feel like anything was tangible was on the line. Not that I didn’t like what I saw but some sort of contendership should have been on the line.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: CIMA/15:04/***1/4

-Ricochet comes out to berate CIMA for what he did Friday night. Ricochet tells CIMA to stay out of his business. CIMA calls Ricochet childish… I think.

Match Analysis: I’d argue Del Sol was the MVP of the weekend considering he had three quality matches. Very good action, similar to the previous tag team match. I love Generico and Del Sol and would love it if they could tour Japan together as part of Dragon Gate. I think Del Sol working with Generico every night could do wonders for his career. He’s obviously going to be a focal point of the promotion moving forward, and I’m more convinced every day that he’s the right choice to be that high flying superstar.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: El Generico and Samuray Del Sol/15:16/***1/2

Match Analysis: if not for the effort put by these men throughout the year in the various titles defenses, I cannot imagine what the value of the Open the Freedom Gate would be. This was easily the best match of the weekend. Because no other match was an crazy, this was far more effective. The nearfalls did not come off as ridiculous as one might think. I loved the story being told throughout as Ricochet had to resort to low tactics in order to pin Fox. The Ricochet’s cockiness led to him being pinned. Gargano finally conquered Tozawa with heart and determinination. Outstanding stuff throughout.

Winner (s)/Time/Rating: STILL Open the Freedom Gate Champion-Johnny Gargano/30:28/****1/2

-Gargano puts over the fans who braved a hurricane to make out on this night. Gargano talks about how grateful how they are to be able to entertain everyone. He points out how this is the last DG USA show of the year. Gargano says more shows are coming in January. He talks about lasting a full year as the champion. He talks about all the places he’s defended the championship. He vows to give it all he’s got. Gargano says the belt is going nowhere.

The Verdict: The main event makes Freedom Fight 2012 an easy thumbs up and a must watch show. This came off as a great cap off to what was at times a mixed bag of a weekend. After you get past the first couple matches, you run into a series of good to great to outstanding matches. Definitely check this show out.

Cannon turned in a solid performance, but I have to question his purpose in DG USA moving forward.
Winner (s)/Time/Rating: Arik Cannon/6:45/**3/4

Match Analysis: It’s tough to take these two guys seriously sometimes, but when they apply themselves, they can still put on really good matches like they did here. Good work all around as they didn’t empty out the kitchen sink. They went appropriately violent without crossing the line or taking any ridiculous bumps. I don’t think blood would have enhanced this match in any conceivable way. I enjoyed this.
