IMPACT Wrestling 12/13 Preview:
- Last Sunday at Final Resolution, Bobby Roode not only lost to World Champ Jeff Hardy but he also ended the night as the victim of an Aces and 8’s beatdown. Undoubtedly angry at what transpired, “The IT Factor” will be tearing through the Impact Zone trying not only to cope with the loss but to find out why the group he paid off to hurt Hardy turned their attack towards him.
- Speaking of Hardy, “The Charismatic Enigma” will be teaming with James Storm to face The Aces and 8’s (likely Devon/D.O.C.) in tag team action. Other matches announced for tonight’s show: Rob Van Dam Vs. Kenny King in a non-title match and Velvet Sky making her in-ring return against Madison Rayne.
- Christopher Daniels has a lot to gloat about after Final Resolution, coming up the victor against AJ Styles in their “final” one on one match together. With such a big victory under his belt, Daniels and partner in crime Frankie Kazarian should be riding high. Styles, meanwhile, is headed into 2013 on arguably the steepest decline of his TNA career. Both men will be on hand to discuss their epic match and what’s next on their docket.
- Although Austin Aries was victorious against Bully Ray at Final Resolution, there’s a good chance that their rivalry has not concluded quite yet, nor have the tensions between Ray and Hulk Hogan cooled down.

Last Sunday at Final Resolution: Austin Aries beats Bully Ray, Christopher Daniels defeats AJ Styles in their “One Final Time” encounter by using Styles’ own move, Bobby Roode‘s deal with the Aces and 8’s goes sour and results in an end of the PPV beatdown.

[[Opening Segment]]
The pyro goes off and we’re “live” at the Impact Zone in Orlando, FL. Todd Keneley quickly welcomes the home audience, before the music of Bobby Roode hits. Out comes “The IT Factor”, who sternly walks to the ring with a face that reads “all business”. Roode says he’s trying to wrap his head around what happened at Final Resolution. Roode says he considers himself an intelligent businessman and made a very expensive business investment: a guarantee that he’d become the new World Heavyweight Champion. He says he made a deal with the Aces and 8’s and where he comes from a deal is a deal, so he calls out The Aces and 8’s to answer for the post-match beatdown.
The Aces and 8’s make their way out, Devon and D.O.C. leading a group of three masked men. They stop outside of the ring. Devon says a better deal came to them, and Roode is confused. Devon says someone came to them and offered a better deal than Roode. Roode demands to know who it was that outbid him. Devon refuses to give out the identity, saying they keep it in the club. Devon and D.O.C. climb up to the apron. Devon says they can’t tell them who it was but later tonight they might get their answer. They walk into the ring, and Roode exits.
Jeff Hardy all of a sudden makes his way out with James Storm. He says they aren’t out here to play detective, they are here to fight. Hardy and Storm rush the ring and clear it of Devon and D.O.C. Hardy/Storm jaw at The Aces and 8’s, and Storm is now wielding Devon’s baseball bat.
- [Thoughts]: A good old fashioned “whodunit”, I can respect that. I like how the Aces and 8’s are now hired hitmen instead of an invading group; they needed to transition the group into TNA and they found a way to do it. An extremely awkward way, but a way nonetheless. Special shout-out to Devon for using the word “outbidded”, which isn’t actually a word.

We head to the announce table where Todd Keneley introduces his partners in crime Mike Tenay and Taz. They wonder out loud who outbid Roode at Final Resolution and Tenay pimps the Hardy/Storm Vs. Aces and 8’s match for later tonight. Keneley then announces that next week is Championship Thursday and it’s for the Knockouts Title before leading into comments from one of the competitors up for the title shot.

We cut to a backstage video from Velvet Sky. She talks about how happy she is to be back and talks about how focused and ready she is for next week’s “Championship Thursday”. She then says she’s in action next, complete with “pigeons being cooped up” references and such.

[Final Resolution Recap]: Tara beats Mickie James to retain the Knockouts Title. We also get a tearful post-match recap from James, who is disappointed in herself and calls the fact she allowed Tara’s boyfriend to cost her the win “bullsh*t”.

Madison Rayne makes her way out for the opening contest for the first time in I don’t know how long. Her opponent, the also returning Velvet Sky, makes her way out next. Taz goes apesh*t for Sky’s catsuit. He’s TNA’s version of Jerry Lawler. Rayne gets into Sky’s face and says it’s her ring. Tenay brings up their former Beautiful People union.

[Match #1]: Velvet Sky Vs. Madison Rayne
Rayne attacks Sky from behind, but Sky quickly gets the advantage and sends Rayne face-first into the top, middle, and bottom turnbuckle. Sky connects with a Mr. Perfect snap and goes for the pin. 2-count. Rayne slips out of a move and clotheslines Sky to the mat. Rayne steps on Sky’s hair and pulls up on her arms. She breaks before the 5-count but then does it again. Rayne chokes Sky on the middle rope then hits a reverse X-Factor. Rayne puts Sky’s head between her legs and pelvic thrusts her into the mat repeatedly. Rayne goes for a couple of pins, but comes up short. Rayne gets into the ref’s face, allowing Sky to regroup. Sky chops her a series of times then DDT’s Rayne into her knee three times. Sky gets a running start and drops Rayne with a couple of clotheslines and a back elbow. Sky follows it up with a bulldog. Sky finishes her off with a sit-out Pedigree for the 1…2…3.

- [Match Thoughts]: That was certainly a match. Not really much to say here. It did what it needed to do, reintroducing Sky back into TNA action, but that’s about it.

Kurt Angle is backstage with Wes Brisco and Garett Bischoff. He gets them pumped for their tag team match by giving them 5 Hour Energy Drinks.
- [Thoughts]: Part of me enjoys how “in your face” TNA is about product placement. The other part of me wants to change the channel. Also I’m not really looking forward to a Brisco/Bischoff tag team match.

Christopher Daniels and Frankie Kazarian are stopped backstage by the mysterious interviewer. He asks them if they had anything to do with outbidding Bobby Roode leading to the attack. They deny it wholeheartedly, then Daniels says that he beat AJ Styles by himself and didn’t need any help. Kazarian then tells the mysterious interviewer to ask Styles about it.

[Final Resolution Recap]: Angle/Joe/Brisco/Bischoff defeat The Aces and 8’s. Joe proclaims a “death watch” on The Aces and 8’s in a post-match promo.

Robbie E/Robbie T make their way out for the next match. Their opponents, Wes Brisco/Garett Bischoff, make their way out next with Kurt Angle by their side.

[Match #2]: Wes Brisco/Garett Bischoff (w/ Kurt Angle) Vs. Robbie E/Robbie T
The Robbies attack the youngsters from behind and send Bischoff out of the ring. Robbie T drops Brisco with a power slam then sends him into the corner. Robbie E tags in and chokes Brisco in the corner with his boot. Brisco tries to fight his way out but gets taken down with a drop toe hold. The Robbies double team Brisco while the ref is distracted with Bischoff. Robbie T is now the legal man and yells at Brisco as he tries to pick himself up. Robbie T traps Brisco in a standing bearhug. Brisco fights his way out and goes for a tag but Robbie T catches him. Robbie E attacks Bischoff to further prevent the tag. The Robbies double team Brisco once again as Bischoff distracts the ref.
Robbie E continues taunt Brisco then drops him with a bodyslam. Robbie E heads to the second rope. Brisco gets a boot up and Robbie E catches it, then he misses the elbow. This allows Bischoff to tag in. Bischoff splashes Robbie E in the corner followed by a flapjack. Robbie T pulls him down from behind, then Robbie E tags him in. Robbie T whips Bischoff into the ropes, but Bischoff ducks a clothesline and clotheslines Robbie E to the floor. Brisco, who secretly tagged in, makes his way to the top and connects with a flying crossbody on Robbie T for the 1…2…3!

- [Match Thoughts]: The Robbies are now the de facto heel jobber team and that’s sad because they’re leagues above Brisco and Bischoff. The match itself was alright but didn’t really grab me. Bischoff seems to have gotten better in the ring though so that’s definitely a plus.

[Post-Match]: Brisco/Bischoff celebrate their win but while their back is turned, an Aces and 8’s member takes Angle out with a pipe to the knee. Angle’s guys turn around and quickly rush to their mentor’s aid. The announcers play up Angle’s TV Title shot against Devon next week as we head to commercial.
- [Thoughts]: Are we still pretending Brisco/Bischoff aren’t in the Aces and 8’s (or at least one of them)? We are? Okay then.

We get recapped on what just happened moments ago, then we go to the back where a doctor is checking on Kurt Angle‘s knee. Garett Bischoff leaves to get some ice. The doctor says he’s fine, it’s just swollen.

[[Joseph Park Arrives at OVW]]
We head back to the announce table. They bring up Joseph Park and how Hulk Hogan told him to go train in OVW. Luckily we have footage of this. He mumbles about losing a reservation as he drives up to the facility. He heads in and talks to OVW owner Danny Davis. Davis hypes up OVW and asks Park when he wants to train. Before Park can answer, Davis says they’re going to start “right now” even though Park is in a suit. Commence a montage of Park trying to work out but being too out of shape to really do anything. It ends with Park throwing up in a trash can.
- [Thoughts]: I was hoping for vignettes like this and it looks like the TNA Gods have smiled upon me. This was entertaining as hell. Park is so good as a character and watching him work out in a suit was fun (as well as the fact that he can’t even do one sit-up). I assume we’ll get a gradual change in his abilities as the weeks progress much like any good Rocky movie.

Brooke Hogan is in the Hogan Office and Tara and Jessie Godderz make their way in. She says that “their boyfriends” are fighting tonight and doesn’t want that to drive a wedge between them since they’re “A-listers”. Tara then offers to pick her own opponent next week for “Championship Thursday” but Brooke is having nothing of it. Tara then tells Brooke that her boyfriend is gonna get it.

We catch up with Kenny King backstage. He talks about his match against Rob Van Dam at Final Resolution. King says he learns more from his losses than from his wins, and tonight he will knock RVD square on his ass in their non-title rematch tonight.
- [Thoughts]: They’re actually going to keep King around and do something with him this time. YES!!!!

James Storm makes his way out for the next match of the evening, sans duster. Storm’s partner, TNA World Heavyweight Champion Jeff Hardy makes his way out second. The Aces and 8’s music and out comes D.O.C. and a guy in a skull mask (SkullFace) to fight on behalf of their faction.

[Match #3]: Jeff Hardy/James Storm Vs. The Aces and 8’s (D.O.C./SkullFace)
Storm and DOC start the match off. Storm gets a couple of rights but DOC sends him into the corner. DOC whips him into the opposite corner but Storm ducks a clothesline and delivers one himself. He traps DOC in a wristlock and tags Hardy in. Hardy soars off the top, landing on the arm. DOC escape Hardy’s clutches and tags SkullFace in. Hardy gets the advantage easily, using the headscissors to send him out to the floor. Hardy drops SkullFace with a baseball slide, then heads to the apron. He catches DOC and SkullFace with a clothesline, then heads back in to dance around like an idiot as we go to commercial.
-Commercial Break-
Hardy is fighting off DOC as we come back, but SkullFace drops him with a clothesline while the ref is distracted. Hardy rolls to the outside and Storm goes to check on him but the ref forbids this. SkullFace attacks Hardy in the meantime then rolls him back in. DOC connects with an uppercut punch, then lays in some body shots for added oomph. SkullFace tags in and steps on Hardy’s head. SkullFace kicks Hardy around the ring then drives him back-first into the corner. SkullFace connects with jabs of his own before tagging DOC back in. DOC chokes Hardy with his boot Kevin Nash-style until the ref forces him off. SkullFace tags in and locks on a front chancery to prevent the hot tag to Storm.
Hardy escapes with a jawbreaker but is too dazed to make the tag. DOC tags in and drops Hardy with a big boot. DOC chokes Hardy on the bottom rope as the crowd tries to wake him up. DOC stomps on Hardy then grabs his leg to keep him from making the tag. DOC drops an elbow on Hardy’s spine then applies a reverse chinlock. Hardy gets to his feet and elbows out. He kicks DOC in the face and goes for a tag but DOC hits Storm to prevent it. DOC drags him back to his corner and tags SkullFace back in. SkullFace drops the leg over Hardy and goes for the pin. 2-count.
SkullFace drives a couple of knees into Hardy’s face before choking him with it. SkullFace then chokes him with his hand and throws him out to the floor. DOC throws Hardy into the barricade as Storm accidentally distracts the ref. DOC rolls Hardy back in and SkullFace goes for the pin. 2-count. DOC tags back in and hits a running splash as SkullFace holds the legs. DOC goes for the cover but Storm breaks up the count. DOC applies a chinlock then sends him into the corner. Hardy gets an elbow up during a splash and follows up with a Whisper in the Wind. Hardy almost makes the tag but DOC stops him once again. SkullFace tags in and kicks Hardy in the back. Hardy kicks SkullFace off and finally makes the tag.
Storm makes his way in, a house of fire. He knocks DOC to the floor and kicks SkullFace before connecting with a top rope crossbody for a 2-count. Hardy tags back in and Storm clothesline SkullFace in the corner, then gets down on all fours allowing Hardy to connect with the Poetry in Motion. DOC tries to intervene but Hardy/Storm take him down with a double suplex. More members of the Aces and 8’s make their way out, but Storm/Hardy fight them off, including Devon. Storm drops DOC with a Last Call and Hardy hit SkullFace with the Twist of Fate for the 1…2…3.

- [Match Thoughts]: That was a pretty good tag team match, with Hardy doing the bulk of the ring work and playing the good babyface in peril that he does. However the ending was ridiculous; the Aces and 8’s members interfere and yet the ref doesn’t call for the DQ and on top of that the Aces end up eating another pinfall? Oh how the mighty have fallen.

[Post-Match]: The Aces and 8’s charge into the ring. Devon gets on the mic and says the man who paid them off was…Austin Aries. Storm and Hardy look on in shock.
- [Thoughts]: Wait wasn’t Roode the one demanding to know who paid them off? Why didn’t they tell him? He’s the one that asked. Weird. Also The Aces and 8’s broke their whole “we don’t squeal” edict suuuuuper quick.

Hulk Hogan is backstage furious about Aries. Bobby Roode runs in furious as well. Hogan calls Aries and demands that he explain himself by the end of the night. Hogan hangs up and tells Roode to back off, and Roode yells “you better have a plan Hulk!”.

[Final Resolution Recap]: Christopher Daniels defeats AJ Styles with the Styles Clash. Daniels gloats about being the better man in the post-match comments. He says he beat the white knight with his own sword. No post-match comments from Styles as Earl Hebner shoos the camera man away.

[[AJ Styles Addresses the Impact Zone]]
AJ Styles makes his way out to the ring as Tenay details just how much his life sucks right now. Styles says he demanded this time in order to address the TNA fans. He says he’s not going anywhere in response to the “You Still Got It!” chants. After a whole lot of dead air, Styles says he doesn’t know where he’s going or what the next step is. He says he’s spent so much time being a corporate guy that he’s forgotten about “#1” meaning him. Styles says he’s out here to tell people this: this has nothing to do with the fans, the Impact Zone, Dixie Carter, or even Impact Wrestling. He rips off his TNA gear and says “this has everything to do with AJ Styles”. Styles says he’s sick of cleaning up every TNA mess like a corporate janitor and always doing the right thing. Styles says from now on he’s going to do his own thing, and drops the mic. Styles leaves to the back sans music.
- [Thoughts]: Wait since when has Styles been a “corporate janitor” or a man who has always done the right thing? Did I miss something? I mean it was a good promo and everything but there was no basis for anything he said. Huh?

Dixie Carter stops AJ Styles in the back. She asks him who he is, and all Styles does is throw his TNA stuff at her. We cut to Bad Influence who are watching on a TV monitor. Christopher Daniels is elated and sings about sending Styles packing from the company. Frankie Kazarian says he has a surprise for Daniels then walks off singing Christmas jingles. Daniels chases after him, saying he thought they agreed they weren’t going to do big gifts.

Kenny King makes his way out for the next match. His opponent, X-Division Champion Rob Van Dam, makes his way out next. We see clips from their match this past Sunday at Final Resolution and how RVD came out the victor.

[Match #4]: [TNA X-Division Champion] Rob Van Dam Vs. Kenny King
King grabs a quick side headlock. RVD breaks out and applies a wristlock but King reverses it into one of his own. RVD takes him down with a drop toehold and they equally exchange some moves before standing back up to stare each other down. King goes for a kick but RVD ducks and takes him down with a kick of his own. RVD plays to the crowd, and King knees him from behind sending him out to the floor. King follows up with a springboard corkscrew dive onto RVD. King rolls him in and goes for the pin. 2-count.
King connects with a snap suplex and floats over into a series of full mount strikes before a pinning attempt. 2-count. King whips RVD into the corner and hits a flying back splash. King goes for the pin again but it’s only a 2. King sends RVD into the corner, but RVD takes him down. RVD catches King in the opposite corner with a spinning heel kick then hits a split legged legdrop for a 2-count. RVD catches a kick, but King takes him down with a spinning boot. King drops RVD throat-first over the top rope then hits a springboard blockbuster for the 1…2…kick out.
King whips RVD into the corner and goes for another splash but RVD side-steps it. RVD slams King to the mat and goes for the Split-Legged Moonsault but King moves. King goes for a move but RVD reverses into a Northern Lights suplex for a 2-count. RVD ducks a kick then hits a spinning heel kick of his own. RVD hits a spinning legdrop then heads to the top turnbuckle. King runs over and connects with a couple of right hands. King ascends to the second rope and RVD knocks him off. King rolls back to his feet and RVD connects with a flying crossbody. King rolls through it and gets his feet on the ropes for the 1…2…3!
Winner [via Pinfall]: Kenny King (5:44)
- [Match Thoughts]: That was a really fun matchup that told a good story. By the end it wasn’t surprising that King used the ropes to win. It looks like we’re getting a Kenny King heel turn and an X-Division storyline. Merry Christmas to me!

Bully Ray invites himself into Hulk Hogan‘s office. Ray asks Hogan if he’s had a change of heart about him after Final Resolution. Hogan flips over some furniture to show how angry he still is. Hogan says Ray’s personal BS has turned into his business. Hogan says he hasn’t changed his mind one bit about Ray. Ray screams at him, saying that maybe Brooke likes him and making googily eyes at him, and asks him why Hulk thinks he’s doing it back. Hogan brings up Ray and Brooke on the couch from awhile back and Ray says Brooke was just apologizing for Hulk’s behavior. They continue arguing with one another, and Ray angrily throws a bloody towel at him saying that he’s bled for Hogan’s respect. Ray then says Brooke is a grown adult and he should think about that. Ray leaves and Hogan responds with a simple “weak”, deflating the entire segment.
- [Thoughts]: This went on way too long, but I have to admit that for moments both Hogan and Ray were pretty brilliant. Ray was especially awesome, conveying his frustration over Hogan still not trusting him perfectly (who carries around a bloody towel though?). Hogan killed it by saying “weak” though. Completely defeated and deflated what just happened.

[Main Event]: Bully Ray Vs. Jessie Godderz (w/ Tara)
Ray goes right after Godderz. Ray flattens him with a clothesline. He whips Godderz in the ropes and drops him with a shoulderblock. Godderz slowly gets to his feet but goes right back to the mat after a right from Ray. Ray picks Godderz up, and Godderz connects with a right out of nowhere. He tries to follow it up with a couple of chops but Ray doesn’t feel it. Godderz hits the ropes and runs right into the big boot of Ray. Ray sends Godderz face-first into the turnbuckles then connects with a loud loud chop across the chest. Ray soaks in the cheers of the crowd, then connects with another horrifyingly loud chop across the chest. Tara makes her way into the ring to distract Ray. Ray sends her packing with a slap on the ass. Godderz attacks Ray from behind and repeatedly stomps him, angry that Ray touched Tara. Godderz stands over Ray and connects with a series of crossface shots. Godderz takes Ray down once again with a dropkick. Ray is starting to bleed again while Godderz has a hardcore handprint on his chest and a little blood himself.
Ray gets to his knees and chops Godderz once again, sending him down and towards Tara. Godderz gets a pep talk, then drops Ray with a clothesline. Godderz lays a series of forearms into a kneeling Ray, then chokes him with his boot in the corner. Running elbow in the corner from Godderz, followed by a right across the face. Godderz distracts the ref as Tara chokes Ray on the middle rope. Godderz takes Ray down with another dropkick and takes too long to flex, missing a legdrop. Ray quickly regroups and connects with the Bully Cutter for the 1…2…3.
Winner [via Pinfall]: Bully Ray (6:00)
- [Match Thoughts]: Wow, Bully Ray did not hold back on Godderz in this match; those chops were vicious and it looked like he was trying to murder the guy. Godderz kept up pretty well though and landed some stiff shots of his own. Either way this was one brutal motherf*cking match that had me wincing at every chop and strike. In a good way, I assure you.

[Post-Match]: Ray stares at the camera and yells “WHAT’S IT GONNA TAKE, HULK?!?” as blood trickles down his face.

Austin Aries admonishes the mystery cameraman backstage and says he’s going to tell the world why he paid off the Aces and 8’s…next.

[[Austin Aries Explains His Actions]]
Austin Aries makes his way out and grabs a mic from SoCalVal before heading into the ring. Aries admits to paying off The Aces and 8’s, which is whatever since Devon already outed him. Aries says that his money sings, and it sang loud and clear for the biker gang. Aries says he didn’t care if he was outed as long as the job was done, and it was. Aries brings up the fact that Hulk Hogan made him fight his Aces and 8’s battle for him back in August and he wasn’t paid for it. Aries says that after he did Hogan’s dirty work he was pushed aside for the Jeff Hardy train. Aries says that’s why he’s been manipulating and conning people, and he won’t stop until he gets the TNA World Heavyweight Title back.
Hardy makes his way out to interrupt the proceedings, mic in hand. Hardy calls Aries pathetic for hiring a “motorcycle gang” to do his dirty work when all he had to do was ask. Aries says he doesn’t get to just ask, he has to jump through hoops around this place. Hardy says next week is “Championship Thursday” and challenges Aries, with his title on the line. Aries says he doesn’t do what Hardy wants, he does what he wants when he wants to do it. Hardy says that’s the difference between them. He takes Hardy down with a right and the brawl between the two commence. Aries goes for a Brainbuster but Hardy slips out and takes him out with a Twist of Fate. Hardy takes his hoodie off and heads to the top for the Swanton, but Aries rolls out of the ring. Hardy stares at Aries as the announce team wonder if Aries will actually accept the challenge for next week. Fade to Spike TV logo.
- [Ending Segment Thoughts]: Good stuff. Not the way I’d end a show, I’m more of a “main event being the main event” guy, but good mic work from Aries and even Hardy. I’m glad Aries is staying in the title picture and here’s hoping they actually go through with Hardy/Aries III next week (yes I know there are spoilers but I’m not going to read them).

Overall Show Thoughts:
- This episode started out very slow but the second hour picked up immensely. The RVD/King match was really good and I like where they’re going with the feud. The Hogan/Ray confrontation was strong minus some missteps, and much respect to Jessie Godderz for taking those hard ass chops like a man. If you’re going to seek this episode out, check out the second hour. That’s the only one that really matters.
