Uncivil War

Uncivil War on March 9th, 2013

Chuck Roberts starts the show in the ring. He announces that Bobby Fish will not be able to compete tonight due to an injury. Team Big League, however, has found a replacement. Roberts warns Gory against trying anything suspicious tonight. He also brings up the situation that occurred at the end of Payback with Logan Shulo losing the Super Indy Title. Roberts half-heartedly apologizes to Norm Connors on behalf of IWC for Shulo hitting him. Norm interrupts (the man comes out to Thrift Shop!) with his lawyer. Norm announces that he has chosen Jimmy DeMarco to wrestle Logan Shulo tonight. He also says that he is not suing IWC. Rather, he has become the Executive Consultant for Team Big League. Roberts fires back by informing him that the main event of John McChesney vs. Dalton Castle is happening right now…

Opening Match: IWC World Heavyweight Title: John McChesney © vs. Dalton Castle
McChesney isn’t even in his ring gear. He debates taking a countout but charges the ring. Castle clotheslines him to the floor and takes out Team Big League with a dive. Castle throws McChesney into the ringpost and dead-lift slams him around the ring. McChesney rolls out of the ring to create some space. He catches Castle with a thumb to the eye. In the ring, Castle snaps off a hurricanrana but falls victim to a flapjack. McChesney takes control until Castle fights back with a pumphandle suplex. Jimmy Nutts tries to interfere and the spot ends up looking pretty awkward. McChesney connects with a superkick and grabs a chair. Castle dodges a chair shot and hits a german suplex to become the new…wait! CJ Sensation, who Norm has just appointed as a co-senior official, disqualifies Castle for using the chair. McChesney retains his title at 9:04. McChesney’s title reigns usually have a problem with the frequency of screwy finishes and history looks to be repeating itself. Clearly, something was up when this was announced as the opener, but hopefully this doesn’t become a trend. **

Match #2: Super Indy XII Qualifier: HD Cannon vs. Andrew Palace

Bobby Fish accompanies Palace to the ring. If Palace wins, Fish will be entered into Super Indy. Cannon showcases his power advantage early on as Fish gets on his case for pulling Palace’s hair. Cannon hits a delayed vertical suplex. Palace snaps his neck across the top rope and hits a swinging neckbreaker. Palace takes over until Cannon hits a huge back suplex. He wrestles Palace to the mat and applies a crossface. Palace lays in a knee to the midsection and follows with another neckbreaker. He hits a senton but wastes time putting on his goggles. Cannon attempts a splash mountain but Palace escapes and hits an implant DDT for the win at 7:32. Fish is the first entrant in Super Indy XII. Cannon still looks a little uncomfortable in the ring but Palace is progressing nicely. The match was rough, but at the end of the day I’m happy that Fish is in Super Indy. *½

Match #3: Logan Shulo vs. Jimmy DeMarco

Norm Connors accompanies DeMarco to the ring and tells Shulo to pick someone from the crowd to be in his corner. Shulo picks a particularly muscular fan and DeMarco looks worried. Shulo refuses a handshake and slaps DeMarco. Norm immediately gets involved and Shulo’s fan chases him to the back. Shulo sends DeMarco into the ringpost and stretches his back across it. DeMarco tries a few chops to no avail and runs into a discus lariat. Shulo brawls with him around ringside. DeMarco shoves Shulo’s fan and runs into the ring. The fan stares down DeMarco but attacks Shulo! The referee calls for the disqualification at 4:56. DeMarco announces that he has found the “heavy metal uber Jesus” as Chuck Roberts looks concerned at ringside. This was clearly just a way to introduce Team Big League’s new bodyguard. While another unclean finish occurred, this wasn’t advertised as one of the bigger matches on the card. *

Match #4: IWC Tag Team Titles: Dennis Gregory and Jimmy Vegas © vs. Colin Delaney and Keith Haught

Before the match, the Founding Fathers announce that they aren’t taking sides in the Chuck Roberts vs. Norm Connors war. Delaney and Haught send the Founding Fathers to the floor and stand tall in the ring. Vegas catches Delaney on a dive attempt and rams him into the apron. Gregory attacks Haught from behind and connects with a superkick. The Founding Fathers isolate Haught until he avoids a charge from Vegas and makes the tag. Delaney connects with a leg lariat on Gregory and lands a dive to the floor onto Vegas. Gregory spears Haught out of nowhere and hits a gourdbuster on Delaney. Delaney responds with a modified go 2 sleep. Haught goes up top for a splash but gets crotched on the top rope. Gregory hits a running powerslam on Haught for a nearfall. HD Cannon runs out and starts brawling with Vegas. Haught connects with a knockout kick on Gregory. Delaney and Haught become the new IWC Tag Team Champions at 10:22. The fans have taken to the relatively new team of Delaney and Haught and the title change is at least interesting. I hope the Founding Fathers play a larger role in the Roberts/Norm feud, so maybe it’s for the best that they move on. This was nearly on par with their match from Winner Takes All. **½

Match #5: Jimmy Nutts and Joseph Brooks vs. Aiden Veil and Jordan Lennox

WAR attack Team Big League during their entrance. They brawl around ringside with WAR firmly in control. In the ring, Lennox connects with a running knee strike on Brooks. Team Big League retreats to the floor and Lennox takes them out with a dive. Nutts trips Lennox from ringside and Brooks lands a slingshot splash. They isolate Lennox until he takes advantage of some miscommunication and makes the tag. Veil misses a charge and Brooks rolls him up with his feet on the ropes for the victory at 5:42. I smell an improvised multi-man main event due to all of these screwy finishes. This match ended before it could kick into a higher gear, which is a shame because I was hoping they’d receive more time and deliver a more fleshed out match than their encounter last month. *¼

John McChesney attacks WAR after the match and Team Big League continues the assault. Dalton Castle and Logan Shulo make the save. Chuck Roberts books an impromptu main event: Shulo, Castle, and WAR vs. McChesney, DeMarco, Nutts, and Brooks in an elimination eight-man tag team match.

Match #6: Justin Idol vs. Chest Flexor

If Idol wins, he will become a full-time member of the IWC roster and Flexor will be forced to leave Team Big League. Andrew Palace attacks Idol during his entrance. Flexor and Palace continue to beat down Idol around ringside. Flexor and Idol finally enter the ring and the referee calls for the opening bell. This seems incredibly unfair to Idol but I guess that’s the point. Palace continues to interfere, slamming Idol onto the entrance ramp. Idol barely beats the ten count. Flexor continues to control until Idol lands a flying crossbody. Flexor tries a quick rollup for a nearfall. Idol spits at him and lays in a series of strikes. He follows with a german suplex and comes off the middle rope with a senton. Flexor drapes him across the top rope and goes up top. Idol crotches him on the top rope and hits a back suplex to the canvas. Idol connects with a knockout kick for a two count. Palace runs into the ring and plants Idol with an implant DDT. Flexor covers for a nearfall. Idol roars back with the Spear Crusher to earn a spot on the IWC roster at 10:08. I thought the whole match worked quite well for what they were going for. Flexor had the unfair advantage from the onset and Idol nobly fought back while testing out his previously injured back in the process. I look forward to seeing Idol in higher profile matches in the coming months. **

When Idol appears backstage, Chuck Roberts is waiting with a contract for him. Idol refuses the contract and walks away.

Match #7: IWC Super Indy Title: Anthony Nese © vs. Mike Rayne

Rayne is currently undefeated in IWC but that could all change tonight. They lock up and Rayne shows no respect to the current champion. They trade control on the mat. Nese sneaks in a cheap shot behind the referee’s back. Rayne avoids a charge, hits an atomic drop, and connects with a leg lariat. Nese misses a charge and falls to the floor. Rayne follows out with a plancha. Nese rams him into the apron and elevates him into a backbreaker in the ring. He takes over until Rayne blocks a lionsault with knees. Rayne follows with a series of kicks. Nese escapes the Doppler Effect but falls victim to a chinbreaker. Nese responds with a pumphandle powerbomb for a nearfall. Rayne shrugs off a few kicks and stares down the champion. They matrix to avoid each other’s kicks and both attempt a superkick at the same time. Nese connects with a mule kick but walks into a superkick. Both men are down. Rayne blocks a hurricanrana and hits a powerbomb of his own. He transitions into a boston crab and finally an STF. Nese is able to reach the bottom rope. Nese escapes another Doppler Effect and hits a bucklebomb. Nese connects with a facewash knee strike to retain his title at 13:54. Rayne has had his good days and bad days in IWC, but he undoubtedly brought it against Nese in his best performance yet. They had solid chemistry together and what resulted was a solid back and forth contest that provided a much-needed quality contest on this show. I liked the story of these two being established as equals until Nese was finally able to just overwhelm his less experienced opponent. Despite his undefeated streak ending, Rayne came out of this match for the better. ***¼

After the match, the lights go out and Gory appears in the ring. He spits red mist into Rayne’s face and leaves in darkness. Staff members come out to check on Rayne.

Match #8: Elimination: Dalton Castle, Logan Shulo, Aiden Veil, and Jordan Lennox vs. John McChesney, Jimmy DeMarco, Jimmy Nutts, and Joseph Brooks

Shulo takes down Brooks with a shoulder tackle and the faces take turns dishing out some punishment. Veil hits a rolling neckbreaker and Brooks is quickly eliminated. Team Big League takes a moment to regroup at ringside. Veil lands a standing moonsault onto Nutts. Lennox catches DeMarco with a series of kicks. DeMarco low blows Veil behind the referee’s back and rolls him up to eliminate Veil. McChesney blocks a charge from Lennox and hits an electric chair bomb to eliminate him. Team Big League now has an advantage. Shulo hits a delayed vertical suplex on McChesney but quickly falls victim to the numbers game. Team Big League isolate Shulo until he connects with a double clothesline and makes the tag. Castle cleans house with a series of strikes. Shulo hits an electric chair powerbomb on Nutts to eliminate him. DeMarco and Castle have an exchange, ending with Castle hitting a dead-lift german suplex to eliminate DeMarco. McChesney connects with a double missile dropkick. Shulo elevates McChesney into a german suplex from Castle. Shulo hits an electric chair powerbomb on McChesney to eliminate him. Shulo and Castle are the winners at 12:29. This main event felt pretty rushed and didn’t fully compensate for the unclean finishes to start the show. The rapid-fire eliminations didn’t allow anyone to stand out and what could have been a standout contest to advance the promotion’s major feud will most likely be forgotten about by next month’s shows. Still, there was plenty of good effort from everyone involved but the time constraints were too binding. **½
