ROH 4/29/2017 TV Review
Baltimore, Maryland
William J Meyers Pavilion

The show this week was the second episode taped in Baltimore, Maryland. Ian Riccaboni and Colt Cabana were on commentary to start the show.

First Match: Coast to Coast( Leon St. Giovanni & Shaheem Ali) vs. The Kingdom (Matt Taven & Vinny Marseglia w/ TK O’Ryan)

Nice to see Coast to Coast some offense in here and be presented as a tag team that is rising the ranks. Cabana made an amazing Space Ghost reference during this match and it’s the little things like this that make him so enjoyable on commentary alongside Riccaboni. As Ali and LSG seemed poised for victory in this one Taven caught LSG with a superkick. Just as Taven was going for the pinfall victory, Marseglia stopped the referee from counting three and suggested that Taven hit the Angels’ wings on Shaheem Ali, sending a message to Christopher Daniels. As much as I would have like to see Coast To Coast pick up a win and gain some momentum in the division, building Taven going into the title shot is more of an immediate concern.

Winners: The Kingdom

The Young Bucks came out and spoke about regaining their titles and how their issues with Cole have been settled. Matt then issued an open challenge to any team in the back. Mike Mondo and Kenny Doane came out to answer the challenge and said they didn’t want to wait until next week, sliding into the ring, only to be immediately superkicked, leaving Mondo and Doane laid out in the ring.

Second Match: Matt Sydal vs. Flip Gordon

It’s nice to see an influx of new talent in ROH. AFter David Starr’s appearance last week, having Flip Gordon on the show to take on another new face in Matt Sydal is refreshing. It will be interesting to see if these talents are used prominently moving forward. Sydal and Gordon had a nice back and forth here, pitting the veteran against what in many ways is the younger version of himself, as Gordon earned the name Flip with his athletic prowess. In the end, Sydal defeated Gordon via pinfall after hitting Air Borne. After the match, Scurll snuck in and tried to lock the chicken wing on, but Sydal was able to shake him off before intimating the title would be his soon. The build for Scurll and Sydal is nuanced in a way that Scurll’s other contenders have not been.

Winner: Matt Sydal

Adam Cole came out for an interview with Ian Riccaboni. During this story time with Adam Cole (Bay Bay) Cole said that everything is well with Bullet Club and that next week they will be taking on Castle and Daniels the following week.

Main Event: Tornado Rules 4 Corners Match-Winner becomes # 1 contender

Silas Young vs. Jay White Vs. Adam Page vs. Jay Lethal

This match was what you would expect from this four men and was given plenty of time. Page and Young looked strong as usual and it seems that both are being groomed to move up a bit on the card. The issues the brewed during the match the won were able to play out here, with Lethal and Silas Young’s Lethal won via pinfall after a Lethal Injection on Silas Young. Young taking the pin was a bit confusing here as White is the least likely to get and ROH World title shot soon and would not have lost anything by coming out on the losing end here. Either way, the match and the aftermath did well to build to the triple threat match that will be taking place at the NYC War of the World show.

Winner: Jay Lethal

Final Reaction: B-

This episode did not contain any Earth-shattering segments, but the matches and segments did build to future events. The Bucks calling out teams from anywhere at any time, but this feels very similar to what is happening with the TV title right now. This speaks to the state of the tag team division now-the Bucks are head and above every other team in the company right now and that disparity is a problem in creating believable feuds with anyone in the company right now. As has been the case, Cabana and Riccaboni work very well together and truly make each match more enjoyable with their quips.
