Here are some things that happened in the last week and over the weekend. A lot of title retainments for one thing and a retirement is pending…

Jordynne Grace retained the Pro Wrestling Magic Women’s Title against Skylar on Saturday in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. The title defense is Grace’s second in her 184-day reign… “Kotori” has officially retired from professional wrestling after working Gatoh Move’s show on Thursday at Shinkiba 1st RING. She teamed up with SAKI in her final match, which closed the show and took the loss to Riho and Mizuki – her retirement is reportedly due to circumstances with her family which are unknown. “Kotori” is now nineteen-years-old and began wrestling for the promotion back in 2012, therefore a possible return the business is possible down the line… Shanna picked up her first successful title defense as POW Ladies Champion on Friday in Rostock, Germany, as she bested Lissy Lennox… Jaylee retained the OVW Women’s Champion against Cali on Wednesday… Command Bolshoi and Leon made their sixth title defense of the Daily Sports Women’s Tag Team Championships at PURE-J’s show on Sunday. They retained the belts against Mari Apache and AKINO after Leon picked up the win with the Clutch de Gao… A big development took place at Preston City Wrestling’s all-female event on Saturday as Lucy Cole was stripped of the Women’s Championship after being unable to compete due to injury. The promotion cited that Cole since winning the title back in August has not defended the belt in the allotted ninety-days timeframe after she was crowned the inaugural champion. The announcement was made after Nightshade’s Falls Count Anywhere match where she defeated Lauren in the show’s closer. Greg Lambert stated that the new champion would be decided at the promotion’s second show that night, “Festive Fury” held at the same venue, the Evoque in Preston. Nightshade faced off against Rhio for the title, however, the bout wound up going in Rhio’s favor as she’s the new and second PCW Women’s Champion… Tsukasa Fujimoto picked up her fourth Triangle Ribbon Title defense on Sunday, retaining against Hamuko Hoshi and Miyako Matsumoto after getting the Japanese Ocean Cyclone Suplex Hold on Matsumoto for the win… Toni Storm took her PROGRESS Women’s Title back to Australia over the weekend and successfully defended it against Shazza McKenzie in Thornbury, Victoria for Melbourne City Wrestling’s final show of the year. The title defense marks Storm’s seventh with the PROGRESS belt… Seleziya Sparx broke both her tibia and fibula during her matchup in Toronto for Superkick’d on Friday night. The injury took place during the show’s main event, as she faced off against Kris Chambers and unsuccessfully challenged him for the championship. Sparx has since undergone surgery to repair the fractures… Little Miss Roxxy is now a double champ – she defeated Lizzy Styles for the TCW Women’s Championship on Saturday in Leeds and escaped another British Bombshells title defense on Sunday when she was successful in overcoming Amarah in Halifax…

Misaki Ohata picked up her fourth and fifth title defenses as Regina di WAVE Champion on Sunday, as she fended off Manami Katsu at PURE-J’s show at Korakuen Hall and went on to successfully retain against Miki Tanaka a couple of hours later during Pro Wrestling WAVE’s show at Shinkiba 1st RING. Yuki Miyazaki and Nagisa Nozaki have issued a challenge to Takumi Iroha and Rin Kadokura for the WAVE tag team belts after Iroha picked up a non-title win over Mika Iida and Rina Yamashita. An official date for the championship match has not been set, but I can speculate that it will likely be apart of the December 29th lineup that already includes Ayako Hamada and ASUKA going up against Meiko Satomura and Chihiro Hashimoto and another matchup that sees Yamashita and Ryo Mizunami taking on SAKI and a partner of her choosing, KAORU.

Yumi Ohka won the number one contender’s tournament by defeating Mizunami in the finals with the Big Boot and as a result, she will be going onto face Misaki Ohata for the Regina di WAVE strap. However, one of the big developments coming out of WAVE’s show besides Yumi Ohka making it to another Regina Championship match is the announcement by Mika Iida and her decision to retire next year at Korakuen Hall. Since breaking into the profession seven years ago, Iida has remained a mainstay in the promotion but unlike most of her peers, she hasn’t experienced much success under the umbrella or outside of it.

Besides a three-month stint as one-half of the tag team champions back in 2014 with Sakura Hirota and making it to the finals of the Catch the WAVE tournament in 2015, Iida has never been propelled to the singles championship or been a consistent player in singles competition and its possibly due to WAVE already having their upper-echelon carved out and Iida suffering multiple injuries since 2014. The first occurred sometime in 2013 when she sustained a knee injury; a benefit show was held on January 30th of that year to raise money for Iida following her surgery. It featured one of her trainers, Ayumi Kurihara working the show’s opener and teaming up with Mio Shirai in the main event against Kana and Shuu Shibutani. Iida has cited complications with her back being the sole reason behind her decision to hang it up; her final matchup is scheduled to take place at WAVE’s May 4th show.

Nikki Knight dropped the ASP Women’s Championship to Erica Torres in her second title defense on Sunday in Oklahoma City… Jennifer Knox retained the FULL Women’s Title against Jade in Antofagasta City, Chile on Saturday… Brooke Valentine’s IPW Women’s Title defense against Frankie Jay on Friday in Algona, Iowa ended in a no contest and as a result, she retained. She defended the belt against Sierra Avery the next night and again, she retained… Kurumi Hiragi has two title opportunities coming up and the first one takes place on Christmas Eve, as she and Akane Fujita challenge Risa Sera and Maya Yukihi for the International Ribbon Tag Team Championships at the Ryogoku KFC Hall in Tokyo. The matchup was announced after she and Fujita pulled a clean sweep over the champions and Hana DATE along with Mochi Miyagi at Sunday’s show, with Kurumi picking up the final pinfall on Sera following a Diving Body Press. The second championship match came at the request of Kurumi herself, as she’s challenging the current ICE Cross Infinity titleholder, Sera and that contest have been added to “RibbonMania” on December 31st… Riebell retained her Venom Pro Wrestling Women’s belt against Kira Sommers on Saturday in Queensland… SHINE Wrestling’s marketing ploy for Saturday’s show was the theme of “survival” and besides holding a battle royal to determine the newest contender to LuFisto’s championship, the rest of the card does not reflect it. Rain won the matchup in her first appearance for the promotion since coming back from retirement earlier this year and will face the champion for the belt at SHINE 48. For those of you that have forgotten, Rain was crowned the inaugural SHINE titleholder back in July of 2013 and went on to drop the championship to Ivelisse the following January in her final matchup and head into retirement for the next three years. Speaking of Ivelisse, she and Mercedes Martinez retained the tag team titles against Aria Blake and Candy Cartwright. Priscilla Kelly also retained; she defeated Aja Perera to hang onto the Nova Championship. LuFisto is currently injured right now and based on her calendar, which is often updated on her website, she’s going to be at SHINE 48 on January 26th…

Command Bolshoi (left) hovers over Hanako Nakamori as the “ace” of the promotion has been humiliated in the worst way and has had her pride reduced to nothing – @shupromobile ©

Hanako Nakamori is officially edgeless, scalped and without her prestigious Openweight Championship these days after losing it to DASH Chisako at Korakuen Hall on Sunday. She dropped the promotion’s flagship title to Chisako in the main event and had her hair shaven down to a buzz cut while weeping in embarrassment. The rest of the roster with tears in their eyes, watched as Chisako grabbed the scissors chopped a big hunk of Nakamori’s hair off. The win actually marks Chisako’s first-ever singles title acquisition despite winning multiple tag team championships throughout her eleven-year career… Keyra was successful in her latest Crash Femenil Title defense on Friday night in Nezahualcoyotl, Mexico. She retained the championship against Christi Jaynes, Lacey Lane and Mima Shimoda to earn her second defense and was jumped by the Rebellion Amarilla for refusing to take their offer and join the stable. Lacey Lane joined the stable instead… Xia Brookside unseated Livvii Grace of the IPW: UK Women’s belt in her fifth title defense on Sunday to became the new titleholder after Grace had held the belt for a total of 301-days… On Saturday night in Balmoral, Auckland, Candy Lee defeated Britenay for the Impact Pro Wrestling: New Zealand Women’s Championship and became the first transgender competitor to win a title in the country. Besides Mariah Moreno’s capture of the WILD World belt and the NTLL Women’s Championship among others a few years back, the title win lands Lee as the second transgender woman to achieve such an accolade in professional wrestling… Hudson Envy is the fifth entrant into the Making Towns Classic after defeating Laynie Luck at Sunday’s IHWE show in Benbrook, Texas. Envy had to be physically removed from the building following an altercation with Su Yung post-match… Aria Cadenza has announced that she’ll be stepping away from wrestling and moving forward with her life by starting a family. Cadenza is a former one-time NYWC Starlet Champion and after winning the title back in September of 2015, she managed to hang on to the belt for a total of 154-days before losing it to Willow Nightingale in February 2016… Kath Van Goth and Sexxxy Eddy retained their Xtreme Zone Wrestling Tag Team Titles against Cici Galavis and Dale Kilburn in Sorel-Tracy, Quebec on Saturday. The show also included Angie Skye defeating Azaelle.

World Wonder Ring STARDOM presents their year-end spectacle at Korakuen Hall this Sunday, in addition to a precursor two days before in Osaka that sees Kris Wolf putting her newly acquired AWS Women’s Championship on the line against Scarlett. Closing out the promotion’s calendar for the year is three title matches that are not the headlining attraction this time around. Yoko Bito’s second retirement from professional wrestling trumps the show’s entire card – being that Bito was one of the first competitors primed for STARDOM’s main events some years ago, it makes sense that her second sendoff would be the focus of the show. Bito recently took on what was supposed to be fifteen opponents, but got turned into seventeen opponents with Mayu Iwatani showing up and making her first appearance since losing the belt to Toni Storm back in September on December 10th. Bito having fifteen opponents follows on the heels of the big-fifty-person gauntlet that Manami Toyota had for her retirement show on November 3rd in Tokyo. The correlation there is the number of opponents represented the fifteen months Bito had been back in the profession, however, that’s not necessarily true as she’s been wrestling for almost-eighteen months since returning last June.

Instead of a one-off singles match for her final matchup, Bito will be teaming up with Takumi Iroha and together they’ll be taking on the double champion, Toni Storm and Meiko Satomura. The last time Satomura barged into the promotion and teamed up with the current World of STARDOM Champion, she took them straight on for the belt not once, but twice and had the roster’s three top stars in a panic. This could certainly be the case for Storm following this matchup win or lose – Satomura would be her first formidable challenge since winning the belt. On top of that, the promotion has not bothered with elevating anyone from their roster to that peak position to challenge Storm for the title. I must convey that this year’s title pictures for all of the championships have been the most disappointing, in that putting over the latest fleet of foreign talent has become more important than rebuilding their roster and maintaining their momentum.

Io Shirai puts her Wonder of STARDOM Championship on the line against HZK, who was once dubbed the miniature “Io” early on in her career – World Wonder Ring STARDOM ©

Io Shirai defends her Wonder of STARDOM Championship against one of the more experienced members of her stable, HZK and the matchup marks the twenty-year old’s second shot at the title since challenging Kairi Hojo for the belt last December. Shirai officially returned to the promotion in August after losing out on her deal with WWE. The company rightfully passed on Shirai after it was discovered that she had ongoing issues with her neck and a problem with her heart, simply avoiding avoided a possible situation under their watch that could’ve ended with the competitor being shelved for months at a time or even worse. HZK issued her challenge to Shirai for the championship moments after she had retained the belt against Kelly Klein at Shinkiba 1st RING on December 10th. Io accepted the matchup and walks into her third title defense this Sunday – Shirai is now in a similar position that Nanae Takahashi was in a few years back. She’s more focused on working with the younger talent and building up her own stable despite winning the secondary title once again. She has been able to accomplish more than Takahashi in her career with the promotion though she’s still receiving carte blanche because she’s their biggest star.

Shirai returned to the promotion after things fell through with her deal and regained the Artist of STARDOM Championship for the sixth time alongside with HZK and recent recruit to Queen’s Quest, Viper. They have only defended the trios titles once together back in September, as Viper has since returned to Europe and been busy uptaking bookings there and won’t be back in the country until January when the titles will likely be on the line. Mari Apache will be back to defend the High Speed Championship against one of the several rookies, Starlight Kid. Like the trios titles, this will be the second time the belt has been defended since September because Apache has been occupied with other things in the promotion and not the championship. It’s possible that STARDOM has done little to create a new challenger to the title; Starlight Kid and the additional rookies on the roster do not appear to be getting a proper footing in a division and are usually grouped together and taking the pinfall. It’s not helping. Starlight Kid earned a non-title win over Apache as part of a three-way match on December 3rd when she defeated her and Shiki Shibusawa. Shibusawa will also be on Sunday’s show, she and Hanan will take on Kaori Yoneyama and Ruaka.

Kagetsu and Hana Kimura’s latest defense of the tag team straps are also booked for Sunday’s show, as they take on the team of Jungle Kyona and Natsuko Tora. Heading into this championship match, it appears that the stable is on the brink of imploding as Kimura exited the press conference. There appeared to be unrest in the group, as the recent recruit, Tam Nakano felt that Sumire Natsu’s inclusion could potentially be stepping on her toes when it comes to becoming that “visual idol” of the stable. Let’s not forget that Hana Kimura shared similar feelings towards Nakano and her introduction into the posse. The promotion has taken a different direction in the last year; it appears that they are foregoing the physical nature that they became known for and are reverting back to their cookie-cutter look and going for the more “idol” friendly appearance than previous standards. However, Natsu was adopted into the stable by Kagetsu without everyone else’s knowledge and that decision has clearly caused a rift between her and Kimura’s relationship. Kagetsu appears to be the defacto leader of Oedo Tai, though some would consider Kris Wolf to be the one to uptake that position being that she’s been apart of the stable since it’s introduction. There’s no telling where this eventual split between the members is going to happen – Wolf and Natsu will be teaming up on Sunday despite the mess and taking on Konami and Hiromi Mimura. Ahead of next month’s foreign invasion, Rachael Ellering makes her debut alongside Scarlett, as they team up together to take on AZM and Momo Watanabe. Ellering joins Nicole Savoy, Miranda Salinas the returning Viper, Kay Lee Ray and more as part of January’s talent pool being brought in for the new year.
