“The Kevin Steen Show: Chuck Taylor” Review

Interview This took place on 12.13.2013, the day before Chuck would compete on “Cage of Death XV” and Steen would compete at ROH “Final Battle 2013.” This is less of an interview and more of a conversation between Taylor and Steen, which I think is a positive. Steen does ask some questions prompted by what he reads off of Taylor’s Wikipedia page, as well as his own experiences with Chuck and the companies in which they’ve worked together. They discuss Taylor’s formative days of training, the companies he worked for…

Best on the Indies: “Tries His Hardest: The Chuck Taylor Story” Review

Interview The interview was filmed some time in 2008 in the ECW Arena. It’s very short at just under 50 minutes, not even scratching the surface of Chuck’s career. He talks about how he got into wrestling and then training. Something I didn’t know was that Chuck fell out of wrestling but then got back in because he was an ICP fan and heard they were on RAW. He was a fan of the Rock. I wonder if he knew the Rock would tweet him seven years later? The high-fliers…

Best on the Indies: “Big Rig: The Brodie Lee Story” Review

Interview This was conducted the night before Brodie Lee’s final match in CHIKARA against Eddie Kingston (3.24.2012). Eddie Kingston also served as the interviewer, which makes for some awesome banter, as Lee just relentlessly gives Kingston crap the entire time. Brodie speaks about starting out in the Upstate New York independent wrestling scene, burying it to a pretty significant degree. He has some fond memories of fellow wrestlers he befriended and certain matches, but by and large he thinks the scene is mostly filled with “Shindies.”He would travel with his…

Best on the Indies: “War King: The Eddie Kingston Story, Vol. 2” Review

Interview This was interview was filmed on June 1, 2013, the night before CHIKARA’s “Aniversario: Never Compromise” where the company shut down. It is conducted by Leonard F. Chikarason. While I enjoyed Kingston’s first installment of the Best on the Indies, I found this to be a much more fulfilling watch. Chikarason did a fantastic job in his research and in chronological order touches on all of Kingston’s events since his last Best on the Indies. The bulk of the interview has to do with CHIKARA and CZW. Kingston was…

Best on the Indies: “Last Of A Dying Breed: The Eddie Kingston Story” Review

Interview The interview was filmed in May 2008. Eddie Kingston talks about growing up as a fan, and one thing I really love about Kingston is how he works to possess the good qualities of those he grew up being a fan of: Eddie Gilbert (he tells us he got the name Kingston off of Gilbert’s “King of Philadelphia” gimmick), Shane Douglas, Raven, Yoshiaki Kawada, and more. Kingston then discusses him transitioning from Kevin Knight’s school to the CHIKARA Wrestle Factory along with Black Jack Marciano, Jigsaw, and Jolly Roger….

Best on the Indies: “HEY: The Claudio Castagnoli Story” Review

Interview The interview seems to take place some time in 2008. Claudio talks about becoming a fan of wrestling watching early 90’s WWF in Switzerland, training, his first match, coming to America, a really long, extended conversation about cars and traveling on the Indies, being signed/un-signed by WWE developmental, becoming a trainer, and general thoughts on the company’s he’s worked for and certain wrestlers. Honestly there’s not much to say or dissect because very little is gone into any one topic. Claudio has a good sense of humor so the…

Best on the Indies: “Lightning Strikes Vol. 2: The Mike Quackenbush Story” Review

This DVD collection is something I have considered reviewing for awhile. I purchased it, along with Vol. 1 of this series, as soon as it was released back in 2009. I watched the interviews pretty much instantly, but never got around to viewing the matches. In what was seemingly a move to align with the storyline of CHIKARA shutting down, both volumes of the “Lightning Strikes” DVD’s were removed from Smart Mark Video sometime in Summer of 2013 and as of this writing have not been added back to the…

Bete Noire – A Day In The Life (documentary)

Bete Noire is a fascinating wrestler. Not only does she give it her all inside the ring, but outside of it she is wonderfully engaging. I have had the pleasure of conducting an interview with Bete. She also regularly contributes on a website called Breaking Baws in a segment called “Cupcakes And Chinlocks“, where she shows us glimpses into the private life of a Scottish wrestler. The latest collaboration between Bete and Breaking Baws is the short documentary entitled “A Day In The Life“.  Incredibly well put together, watch as…
