Match in Five Words or Less: Great Opener, Bad Finish

Match Summary: it’s the biggest show of the year, and you’ve got a geek doing the announcing.  I guess I should be happy the stream is working, right? No code of honor. Strong lifts him and gets the gutbuster. Elgin with a LARIAT! Martini goes on the apron. The book of truth is in the ring. Elgin puts his foot on it. Backfist. Strong hits him with the book. Orange crush backbreaker. Strong wins.

Match Analysis: I was all about this match until the ending. Why is Elgin losing here? Strong and Steen have wrestled a million times already. He’s already been the television champion. Elgin absolutely should have won here and gotten momentum for 2013, be it the television or world title. Regardless, this was an amazing owner. One of the best openers in years for ROH. The ending is especially off given Strong won’t be joining the House of Truth again anyway.

Winner (s)/Rating: Roderick Strong/***1/2

-Strong says he’s still done with the House of Truth. Martini says for Elgin to give him one more chance and says he loves him. Elgin teases powerbombing him. Martini  cuts a great promo talking about what Elgin and Strong have achieved under his guidance. Martini has one last lesson for Elgin. Slap in the face. Bucklebomb. Backfist and that may have sent Martini completely out of Ring of Honor.

Match in Five Words or Less: Killer Instinct Kills The Beast

Match Summary: Steve Corino comes out to ringside. The announcing will immediately improve 100%. Straight right hands. Kick and punches from Rhino. Duck of the clothesline. Springboard cross body for two. Rhino sent outside. Dropkick by Lethal sends Rhino to the floor. Duck and a superkick. Tope suicida. Whip into the barricade. Chop by Lethal. Right hand to the head. Whip in the corner. Lethal sent into the top turnbuckle. Forearms to the back. The idea is that SCUM paid off Rhino to beat up Lethal in this match. Choking along the bottom rope. Chop by Lethal. Rhino with shots in the corner. Snapmare and body scissors. Shot to the back by Rhino. Bearhug. Is Jim Cornette back? Lethal with right hands. Chop as the hold is broken. Handspring elbow. Leg lariat. Discus lariat. 1-2-NO! Chop on Rhino. Reverse of the whip. Spear. Belly-to-belly suplex. Gore time? Lethal superkicks him. Lethal Combination into the Koji Clutch. Rhino works out of the hold. He powers him and basically hits a suplex. 1-2-NO! Right hands by Lethal. Out of the firemen’s carry. Lethal Injection. Lethal wins.

Match Analysis: Fine way to bring things down a bit after an awesome opener. Not sure what Rhino’s purpose is in the promotion since all he does is lose. Lethal put in another solid performance. I have no idea what the intention is for him, but part of me thinks this ROH crowd will never embrace him as a main event level superstar.

Winner (s)/Rating: Jay Lethal/**3/4

-Steve Corino says Lethal has a lot of balls to talk about wanting to fight the champion after the main event. Corino says he dated Lethal’s mother and says he doesn’t have the cajones to challenge Steen. Jacobs comes from behind. Tag team champions beat Lethal down for fun.  Corino says Lethal will not wrestle Steen or win the world title. That means both of those things will happen. Oh joy.

nana vs

Match in Five Words or Less: COMEDY!

Match Summary: Nana gets streamers! I hope Evans has received extensive training from his client Archibald Peck. Nana is in army fatigues. He yells at Evans and says he made him. Slap by Evans. Spear by Nana. Series of right hands by Nana. Charging clothesline. Off the ropes with a butt splash. He brings Evans down hard. Chop. Evans sends Nana out of the ring. Splash fails and he bounces off the floor. NANA DIVE! Nana sent into the middle turnbuckle. Boots and choking from Evans. Elbow to the back of the neck. Another elbow. Forearm to the back. Another running forearm to the back as the fans chant “Power Ranger.” Snapmare into a chinlock. Back suplex. Elbow drop met with a boot to the face from Nana. Evans with a boot out of the corner. Spinning sidewalk slam by Nana. Senton gets two. Evans goes over. Shoulder tackle. Springboard met with a cutter. 1-2-NO! QT Marshall pulls Todd Sinclair out of the ring. Ernie Osiris goes after Marshall but is sent into the barricade hard. Evans with a powerslam as he recovers. Nana crotches him. Big right hand. SUPERPLEX BY NANA! Forearms by Nana. Evans with a boot. Cradle tombstone piledriver and Evans wins.

Match Analysis: RD Evans had a better match against a part-time wrestler than Marshall ever has. This was fine for what it was. These two worked it like a real match, and you’ve got to give them a ton of credit for pulling off a fine match. I hope Evans can wrestle more within Ring of Honor since they desperately need some characters and comedy in the midcard.

Winner (s)/Rating: RD Evans/**1/2

-Tommaso Ciaampa comes through the crowd and wants in. Referees and officials prevent Ciampa from getting what he wants.

Match in Five Words or Less: Season’s Beatings

Haas tossed back in the ring. Titus brings out a Christmas stocking. Candy canes for everyone! They break them across WGTT’s back. A holiday themed street fight? That’s cute. Benjamin misses a tree shoot. He nails Titus with the bottom of it. Haas takes apart the barricade. He nails Whitmer with it. He separates the name plate from the steel. Benjamin boots Whitmer in the face and that collapses the steel barricade. Haas breaks out his belt and whips Titus back in the ring. Choking. Crutch shot right across Titus’s back. Crowd wants them to use the tree again. Benjamin tosses it away. I’ll say this. If nothing else, WGTT are nothing but pure heels and do nothing to get the fans’ favor. Whitmer brings in a kendo stick and works over Haas and Benjamin. Whitmer whips Haas in the corner. Running knee in the corner. Snap suplex into the northern lights suplex for two. Haas hits a the drunk slam. 1-2-NO! Benjamin with an elbow on Titus. Haas gets control on Whitmer. Clubbering blow. Benjamin goes to the entrance way for the steel barricade. Haas whips Whitmer with the belt once again. Benjamin picks up the stocking. Double team back suplex sends Whitmer’s back into the steel. 1-2-NO! Titus with right hands on Haas. Clothesline sends him over. Benjamin and Whitmer left in the ring. Steel chair shot to the side of his body. Titus sends Benjamin face first into the chair. 1-2-NO! Haas boots Titus into the guard rail, which is laid up in the corner. Big boot. Titus catches himself. Hip toss into the steel. 1-2-NO! Benjamin superkicks Titus. Now it’s table time. It gets set up outside of the ring. Titus rakes the eyes. Suplex struggle. Both men end up on the apron. Right hand exchange. Titus boots him. Benjamin hits Patdirt THROUGH THE TABLE! He sets it up in the ring. Haas laid prone on the table. He quickly leaps off and nails a prone Whitmer on the top rope. Haas drops Whitmer right on his head through the table.

Match Analysis: I don’t feel comfortable talking about this match based on Whitmer being dropped head first through the table. Nothing else matters at this point. That was one of the worst things I’ve ever seen.

Winner (s)/Rating: World’s Greatest Tag Team/***

-The worst part of this situation is they cut right away to the next match and didn’t stay with Whitmer until he was out of the ring. Completely classless.

-Jerry Lynn vs. Mike Bennett (w/Maria and Bob Evans)

Match in Five Words or Less: Good Night Jerry

Match Summary: Not in the mood to watch the rest of the show after what happened with Whitmer. Feeling out process as they stay on the mat to start. Lynn works a headlock. Firemen’s carry. Lynn with a kick. He teases the cradle piledriver but Bennett crawls underneath. Off the ropes. Lynn hits a nice headscissors. Plancha connects. Bennett hides behind Maria. Lynn gives chase as Bob Evans hits a clothesline. Bennett shoves Lynn into the barricade. Small package back in the ring for Lynn. Bennett whipped in the corner. Bennett hits a backbreaker. Chinlock. Bennett with a takedown. Bennett with right hands. Lynn gets himself fired up. Right hands of his own. He tears Bennett down by the hair and continually drives him into the mat. Backrake. Lynn with ten punches in the corner. Lynn hits a DDT but only gets two. Acecrusher from the apron to the floor. Clothesline misses. Spinebuster by Bennett. Bennett has a chair tosses in the ring. TKO blocked. Lynn hits a cut on top of the chair. He tosses the chair and hits Evans. Sinclair counts two. Maria is on the apron. Lynn threatens her. Guillotine. Box Office Smash. Bennett wins.

Match Analysis: Exactly what I expected from a Lynn/Bennett match. I think I was expecting the finish to be a little cleaner, but whatever.

Winner (s/Rating: Mike Bennett/**1/2

-Lynn DDTs Maria and hits a cradle piledriver. He thanks the fans, the wrestlers, and former Ring of Honor owner Cary Silken. Nigel McGuinness, the man Lynn defeated to win the ROH world title, comes out. He talks about his first match with Lynn back at the Rexplex. Fast forward a few years and McGuinness still can’t get over as much as Lynn. “You’ll always be over to us.” Great speech from McGuinness. Lynn says he has six matches left, but none in Ring of Honor. He says fans are part of the show.

Jay Lethal says he wants in on the main event. Nigel McGuinness continually turns him down. Lethal’s whining does nothing to endear himself to the New York crowd. Lethal spits on McGuinness. It nearly turns physical. Referees and security break it up.  If this was supposed to get Lethal over as a babyface, then ROH does not understand their fanbase and who they want to see in the main event tonight.

-Mike Mondo interview. Mondo is apparently going to be back very soon and not be out for a year. Crutches thrown away. Bobby Fish and Kyle O’Reilly come out to interrupt. Fish mocks Mondo to start. He says no American Wolves reunion will be happening on this night. Fish calls Mondo a handicap but says he should be Richards’s partner. Beatdown ensues. Davey Richards makes the save. Fish and O’Reilly beat him down. Edwards comes out and teases hitting Richards but superkicks Fish instead. Heels cleared to the apron. Wolves hug it out.

Fish with a moonsault to break Edwards’s pinfall. O’Reilly with a kick to the side of the head. Richards breaks the count. Fish tossed out of the ring. Richards and O’Reilly exchange strikes. Big clothesline by Richards. Double team backcracker. 1-2-NO! Edwards transitions into the half crab. Richards punts Fish. Edwards with the achillies lock. Sinclair stops.

Match Analysis: Great to see the Wolves back together as this was easily the best match of the show thus far. I loved the action and non-formulaic nature of the match. However, Fish and O’Reilly are even newer and really could have used the victory over a team that’s already over. The matches themselves have met or exceeded expectations. The booking has been questionable in many cases though. Still, this show will be well worth the replay for the wrestling.

matt hardy vs

Match in Five Words or Less: UGH

Match Summary: Crowd shows their slight dislike for Hardy almost immediately. Feeling out process. Hardy out of the ring. Tope suicida by Cole. Hardy sent head first into the side of the ring. Shining wizard. 1-2-NO! Hardy is stunned. Whip reversed. Back elbow by Cole. Hardy hits a sitdown powerbomb for two. Boot. Twist of Fate blocked. Florida Key but they both end up on the floor. Florida key hit on the floor. Hardy is apparently injured. Cole sends him in the ring anyway. 1-2-NO! Twist of Fate. 1-2-NO! If that had been the finish, I would have started the riot. To the second rope. Cole brings him down. Figure four leglock. Hardy tries turning it over but settles for grabbing the bottom rope. Florida Keys blocked. Low blow hit by Hardy as he pulls the shirt over Paul Turner’s eyes. Small package and Hardy wins.

Match Analysis: Nothing about this show has screamed Final Battle, and this was another example of it. The action was solid, maybe even good. I assume Hardy is coming back, but I feel Cole could be used in far better ways than having him wrestle someone who isn’t exactly in the prime of his career. How is Cole significantly better used and booked in promotions like CZW or PWG?

Match in Five Words or Less: UGH Again

Match Summary: Champions get attacked by all four challengers. Jay sends Corino back in the ring. Series of right hands. Whip in the corner. Clothesline to the corner. Alexander with a dropkick. Two count. Mark dropkicks Corino as Jacobs was trying to use the belts. Doomsday device on Jacobs. Briscoes win the belts for the 8th times.

Match Analysis: Too short to really mean anything. I’ve disliked nearly every finish on this show. Why do the Briscoes need the belts? They’re over without them and have literally cannot do anything new with them unless the Steiners and Road Warriors from their primes walk in the door. I’m not saying Coleman and Alexander needed to win here, but they certainly can get the crowd more behind them wrestling SCUM as opposed to the Briscoes.

Table placed on top of the ladder. Crowd chants for them not to die. Boot by Steen. Big ladder knocked down. Steen teases a powerbomb. Back drop through the table and on the ladder. Honestly didn’t look as bad as it reads. I’m not taking anything away from the bump, but I’ve seen worse. Generico sends the ring crew to the back for something. Here comes another giant ladder, reminiscent of what happened in the first ladder war all those years ago. Generico sets the new big, red ladder up. Generico meets Steen at the top rope. Steen puts him on his back. F-Cinq THROUGH ANOTHER TABLE! Steen climbs the ladder. Generico makes his way in the ring. He goes for the champion’s Generico nails Steen with the other big ladder. Generico climbs. Steen grabs his leg. Forearm. A second one and Generico falls back awkwardly. Steen adds another ladder layer but remembers to harpoon Generico in the head. Steen climbs. Generico climbs up the other ladder. Steen bites the fingers to get out of the brainbuster. Low blow. Package piledriver through two ladders! (check out our awesome gifs of this here) Steen of course grabs the title.

Match Analysis: An absolutely ridiculous and epic finale to the year as you would expect. And that finish nearly made up for some of what happened. I wish I could have bought for a single second that Generico was going to win. Major props and credit to both men for doing this. They’re insane and two of my favorite wrestlers in the world. It is an absolute shame that Generico will not be a focal point of this promotion going into 2013. At least we got yet another epic chapter in a war that will likely never end until one of them retired. A for sure match of the year contender. I can certainly never criticize these men for lack of effort.

Winner (s)/Rating: STILL ROH World Champion-Kevin Steen/****1/4

The Verdict: The main event alone makes this a must buy show. Steen and Generico manage to top themselves every single time, and their work deserves your money. Much respect to them for overdelivering in the main event of what should be Ring of Honor’s biggest show of the year.  It is also worth nothing that there was not a single technical glitch, and the show looked outstanding from start to finish. Hell, this looked better than the television show. As concerned as I was before the show, I wasn’t by the end. It appears ROH has their iPPV issues resolved once and for all, a great sign for the promotion going into 2013.

Just based on this wrestling alone, this is a thumbs up Final Battle. You won’t find better action on many other indy shows. The problem as I see it? The finishes. They had a lot to be desired. I’m frustrated by many of the decisions and the screwy finishes throughout. This Jay Lethal push does not feel organic, and the fans were turning on him. Spitting on someone’s mom during a show just doesn’t make you a heel. People like Steen more than Lethal. They also like Generico more than Lethal. ROH has a very tall hill to climb if they want Lethal to the world champion.

As far as the tag team division, I loved the idea of SCUM feuding with C&C for the first few months leading into the anniversary show or Mania weekend. As much as I like the Briscoes and see their value to the promotion in adding character and personality to the television show, they don’t need the belts. I would love to see Jay and Mark in more singles matches to vary things up. A Jay Briscoe/Kevin Steen title match would likely deliver in a house show or television match environment.

The Michael Elgin situation is interesting. Here’s a guy who pretty much had the ROH match of the year with Steen in Toronto back in October. Now he’s jobbing in the opener in a screwy finish. I can only assume Strong and Elgin will continue their feud, but without Truth Martini and the whole House of Truth deal being in the middle, I question the value of having them wrestle more without some sort of championship on the line. If nothing else, it was an excellent sign that they had an amazing opener, and ROH allowed them to tear it up right from the start.

Very good show from a wrestling standpoint. Very questionable booking decisions made. Regardless, well worth your 15 dollars on iPPV or 20 for the DVD.
